SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Former Cal Poly outfielder Alex McKenna has been on a tear of late for the Asheville Tourists.

Over his last 18 games through Monday, McKenna has gone 23-for-66 (.348) at the plate, elevating his batting average for the season 92 points to .292.

During the surge, McKenna has hit six home runs, including homers in three straight games and four of his last five. McKenna was hitting just .200 nine games into the 2021 season.

The 2018 Big West Conference Field Player of the Year and third-team All-American produced an 11-game hitting streak during the run and has 10 multiple-hit games for the season.

Meanwhile, pitcher Taylor Dollard has racked up 44 strikeouts over 25 2/3 innings for the Modesto Nuts. The fifth-round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners a year ago sports a 2-2 record and 3.86 ERA, picking up his second win last Saturday against San Jose with five strikeouts.

Outfielder Bradlee Beesley is hitting .296 for the South Bend Cubs with three doubles, a triple, one home run and six RBIs. The undrafted free agent made his professional debut May 28 against Fort Wayne and went 1-for-3. In his fourth game June 3 versus Lansing, Beesley went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs, and he hit a two-run home run, also against Lansing, on Sunday.

In the Major Leagues, outfielder Mitch Haniger is hitting .261 for the Mariners with 15 doubles, 14 home runs and 38 RBIs in 58 games.

After starting the season in the leadoff spot in the batting order, Haniger is currently the No. 2 hitter in Seattle's lineup and has produced 16 multiple-hit games so far this season, including three-hit contests against Baltimore on April 13 and versus Houston three days later.

Pitcher Spencer Howard has made three starts and three relief appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies, with an 0-1 record and 4.61 ERA. The Templeton High School graduate has struck out 19 batters over 13 2/3 innings.

Utility player Mark Mathias, who played in 16 games with the Milwaukee Brewers last year, is sidelined with a shoulder injury suffered in a Cactus League game and will miss the 2021 season after undergoing surgery May 4.

Former Mustangs Nick Meyer and Zach Zehner, elevated to Triple-A in May, have returned to their Double-A clubs.

Meyer, a catcher in the New York Mets organization, opened the 2021 minor league season by hitting .375 in seven games at Double-A Binghamton and was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse, where he went 11-for-39 (.282) in 10 games with two doubles and six RBIs before he was sent back to Binghamton. He is hitting .300 for the Rumble Ponies and all 12 of his hits are singles.

Zehner, an outfielder in the New York Yankees organization, hit .375 in three games at Double-A Somerset and was promptly elevated to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he  hit .143 with two doubles and a triple with four RBIs in 12 games before he returned to Somerset. He is hitting .235 for the Patriots.

The two Mustangs still in Triple-A are pitcher Chase Johnson with El Paso and outfielder Nick Torres with  the Laguna Vaqueros in the Mexican League.

Johnson has an 0-1 record and 7.71 ERA in 10 appearances on the mound with the Chihuahuas, striking out 12 in 16 1/3 innings. Between May 20-24, he made three scoreless appearances (five innings).

Torres is hitting .225 with four home runs and 13 RBIs, hitting two homers and driving in six runs in a game against Aguascalientes on June 1 (two-run home run, three-run home run, RBI groundout).

In addition to Meyer and Zehner, another ex-Mustang in Double-A is pitcher Erich Uelmen (0-3, 5.06 ERA) with the Tennessee Smokies.

The 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft is scheduled for July 11-13 at the studios of MLB Network in Secaucus, N.J.
