Former Rockets’ foward Josh Smith blasts Doc Rivers after playoff exit - Chron

Josh Smith, who played 13 seasons in the NBA, including two with the Rockets, appeared to have a blast watching Doc Rivers and the Philadelphia 76ers get booted from the playoffs Sunday night.

WHEW: Rockets narrowly dodged a franchise-wrecking Ben Simmons bullet

Smith is from the Atlanta and played nine seasons for his hometown team, so it makes some sense that he would be happy about a Hawks win, but this was much more personal.

Smith played 32 games under Rivers when he spent a half-season with the Clippers in 2015 before he was traded to the Rockets for spare parts.

“Doc Rivers, you lose this game, I’m on your ass!,” Smith posted in the fourth quarter as the 76ers started to collapse.

Smith was just getting started.

Some of the highlights from Smith, who called the 76ers’ defeat “good for my soul”:

“Hey Doc, your ass ain’t been good since 2004-2007, man. You are the finesse God.”

“For real, ESPN, it’s time, man. It’s time for y’all to get on Doc Rivers’ ass. He ain’t got past the second round since he had those boys, man. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo. He ain’t got past the second round. Get on his ass.”

“Hey, Doc Rivers. You’re trash, man. I don’t care what they say.”

“Yeah, Doc. You got (MFers) out here hoping you lose, and I’m one of them.”

"Yeah, Doc Rivers, you talked all that s—t about Paul George and how Tyronn Lue was going to have the same offense, shut your bum ass up. Your no in-game- adjustments-having ass, man.”

Ever since winning a title with the Celtics in 2008 and making it back to the Finals in 2010, Rivers has had a rough time in the playoffs. He has lost 25 playoff games with a chance to clinch the playoff series, which is a record. The Clippers fired Rivers after last season when he blew a 3-1 series lead over the Nuggets, losing a 15-point lead in Game 5, a 19-point lead in Game 6 and collapsing late in Game 7.

In his first stint with the Rockets, Smith played a key role in one of those gut-wrenching defeats when the Rockets overcame a 19-point deficit against the Clippers in an elimination Game 6 on the road. Smith scored 14 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter of that game, one of just many where Rivers’ lack of in-game adjustments came under the microscope.

In case you thought Smith would wake up Monday morning and regret everything he said … nope.

“Just woke up and looked at my story and saw that I was wildin’, but I don’t give a damn,” Smith said with a big laugh Monday morning.
