Clatsop County has experienced a surge in new COVID-19 cases as residents resume work and social activities while the vaccination rate slows.
However, the increase will not push the county into a higher risk level under the state’s framework for business and social restrictions.
For the two-week period from June 6 to June 19, the Oregon Health Authority recorded 41 new cases in the county. That compares to 10 total cases for the previous two weeks. As of Tuesday the county has recorded a total of 1,060 cases.
The county also recorded its ninth COVID-related death, an 89-year-old woman who was hospitalized in April and died June 1 at her home. The death was reported by OHA on June 18.
The increase in cases does not stem from any large single outbreak, but instead to multiple cases tied to workplaces, schools, households and family gatherings, according to the county Public Health Department.
The two-week case total for June 6-19 could have qualified the county to move from Low Risk to the High Risk level, with tighter limits on restaurants, gyms and other venues, if case numbers did not come in the subsequent reporting period. However, Gov. Kate Brown announced on Tuesday that after this week, counties will no longer be moved from one risk level to another.
In May Gov. Brown announced that the entire risk level framework will be lifted when 70 percent of the state’s 18-and-older population is vaccinated (at least one dose). As of Tuesday the state was within about 42,000 of that goal.
Mark Kujala, Chair of the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners, urged local residents to help meet the statewide goal.
"Our local businesses need our help,” he said. “We are so close to hitting 70 percent, and that will insure our businesses stay open. We just need more folks to show up at the next scheduled county clinic - or go to your local pharmacy or doctor's office and get that shot!"
Public Health Director Margo Lalich said the new surge in cases shows that the virus is still circulating locally, and urged the public to get vaccinated, including those who may have been taking a “wait-and-see” approach.
Lalich noted that of 14 cases reported between June 18 and 21, 12 involved unvaccinated individuals.
More than 81 percent of Clatsop County residents age 65 and older have been vaccinated, but rates are lower for younger individuals. Forty-three percent of 20- to 29-year-olds have received a vaccine, and the number for those 12 to 19 is 32 percent.
Overall, 52.7 percent of the county’s total population is fully vaccinated.
The local Vaccine Task Force, a cooperative project of Public Health, Columbia Memorial Hospital and Providence Seaside Hospital, is holding more community vaccination events this week and next week.
