Gina Carano reacts to ‘Star Wars’ exit, end of Cara Dune - Deseret News

Gina Carano recently explained her thinking behind what happened between her and Lucasfilm, and shared details about why she posted what she did on social media.

What happened

Carano and Lucasfilm recently cut ties after a recent round of social media posts from the actress who formerly played Cara Dune, as I wrote about for the Deseret News.

A Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement (via io9):

  • “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

The post in question came on Instagram. Carano had shared an Instagram photo post on her Instagram story that compared Jewish people being attacked in the streets during the Nazi Germany era to how people are treated in modern times due to their political beliefs, as I wrote for the Deseret News. The post set off social media, who ignited the hashtag #FireGinaCarano to trend.

  • The photo was deleted from Gina Carano’s Instagram story on that day.

Carano reaction

But Carano recently reacted to the news to Bari Weiss, former op-ed editor and writer for The New York Times. She defended her decision to post the image on her Instagram story and wondered why it was taken so negatively.

  • “I was in utter shock and confusion when certain people said it was anti-Semitic,” she wrote to Weiss. “Then, as I went to take it down, I noticed that the image was not the same as the one people were referencing. I was honestly confused: Should I take it down, or leave it up? I still don’t know the answer to that question, because taking it down only makes the mob attack you more.”
  • “The image for me was a statement that people need to stand together and rise up, stop being so manipulated by the powers that believe they know what’s best for you and play games with our lives,” she wrote. “My heart has only ever had ultimate respect and love for the Jewish community.”

Carano also told Weiss that Disney asked her to apologize over pronoun usage. She declined the invitation and instead made her own statement about pronoun usage. She was then taken off all “Mandalorian” promotions, she told Weiss.

  • “That was heartbreaking, but I didn’t want to take away from the hard work of everyone who worked on the project, so I said OK. That was the last time I was contacted about any type of public statement or apology from Lucasfilm. I found out through social media, like everyone else, that I had been fired.”

What’s next?

Gina Carano already has a new project in the works. She will be teaming with Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire for a new film, which Carano will reportedly produce, direct and star in, as I wrote for the Deseret News.

  • “The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams — to develop and produce my own film — come true,” Carano told Deadline. “I cried out and my prayer was answered. I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.”
