Playing in a field made up of nine other Pac-12 teams, the Ducks will enter Tuesday's second round with a one-stroke lead over Arizona State and a four-stroke advantage over third-place USC.
Oregon was led by senior Alexis Phadungmartvorakul, who holds a share of the individual lead after firing a 3-under 69 in the opening round. Sophomore Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen is tied for sixth overall following a 1-under 71, and freshman Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu is also in the top 10 after an even-par 72.
"I'm extremely proud of our team's performance today and just thankful to be back out here competing," said head coach Derek Radley. "Our girls had really great energy all day today and that translated into really strong scores. We're just so thankful to be here and excited to see what the next two days bring."
How it Happened: Phadungmartvorakul made bogey on her third hole of the day, but that proved to be the only blemish on her scorecard the rest of the round. The senior birdied the par-3 ninth hole to enter the turn at even-par, and she made five straight pars before finishing with three birdies across her final four holes.
Phadungmartvorakul sits in a three-way tie for the lead at 3 under with UCLA's Emma Spitz and USC's Alexa Melton.
It was a similar story for Nielsen, who last season just the third Duck ever to receive WGCA all-America honors. The sophomore bogeyed her first hole and was even through nine after a birdie at No. 7, and she used two birdies on the back nine to shoot 1 under on the day. Nielsen is in a four-way tie for sixth place on the individual leaderboard, two strokes behind Phaundmartvorakul and the other leaders.
Lu enjoyed a solid opening round in her first official collegiate tournament, shooting an even-par 72 to end the day in a tie for 10th overall. The No. 45 ranked women's amateur in the world, Lu was 2 under on the front nine with her first career eagle on the par-5 fifth.
Sophomore Briana Chacon rounded out the counting scores for the Ducks with a 1-over 73, making three birdies on the back nine after going 3 over through the first nine holes. Ching-Tzu Chen closed the day with a solid 2-over 74 while leading Oregon with 14 total pars.
