MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman Aliyah Carter logged a match-high 14 kills and the K-State defense stifled TCU, holding the Horned Frogs under a .100 efficiency, in a Friday-night sweep at Bramlage Coliseum, 25-15- 25-16, 25-15.
The No. 10 Wildcats (9-4, 9-4 Big 12) hit a season-high .367 as an offense, as Carter hit at a .379 clip, in picking up their fourth consecutive victory. Fellow freshman Kadye Fernholz added seven kills on just 10 swings without an error, turning in a career-best .700 hitting percentage.
K-State owned a 40-28 edge in total kills while its defense tallied nine team blocks. Abigail Archibong led the way with six block assists and Holly Bonde turned in four total blocks (1 solo, 3 assists). The Wildcats led for the entirety of the match against the Horned Frogs (1-6, 1-6 Big 12), who played their first match since October 16.
"What I've loved is that we've taken them one at a time," said head coach Suzie Fritz of her team who has won six of its last seven contests. "We've won some really close matches and we've been in a lot of five-gamers. We've played more games than anybody in the Big 12, but we are finding ways to win when it matters.
"I thought it was a pretty dominating performance for us tonight. Just to be able to hit near .400 as a team feels really good. And to TCU's credit, they're coming off some pretty significant adversity in they haven't played for a month. We look like we are in late-season form, so I was very, very pleased with tonight's match."
Brynn Carlson did not commit an attacking error in racking up six kills on only 14 swings, her second straight outing hitting .429, while Jayden Nembhard came off the bench to register three kills on four attacks.
Over the last two sets, K-State totaled 29 kills against three errors, hitting .413 and holding the Frogs to 18 kills with 10 errors (.145).
"We were able to overcome some disruptions, a little bit, in our lineup and play a little bit short tonight but felt no break in the chain," added Fritz. "For me, those were significant positives. And to be able to come out and hit .367 and hold your opponent under .100 – that's a pretty good separation, that's a good night for us."
Carter pounded four kills to lead the way offensively in set one. Defensively, K-State forced TCU into 10 attack errors in the set as the visitors hit .000. Archibong and Bonde helped account for four blocks over the set's final five points.
The Cats totaled five team blocks in the frame, with Archibong accounting for four block assists while Bonde added three. K-State finished on an 8-2 run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Cats continued to cruise in the second set, racing out to a 6-2 lead and later used a seven-point burst to open a 20-9 advantage. Carter again led the way offensively, this time picking up six kills on 13 attacks without an error (.462). K-State put down 17 kills and hit .395 to grab a two-set edge.
K-State rolled to an early nine-point lead, as it opened the last set on an 11-2 run. The Cats continued their efficient offensive performance with their best attack percentage of the night, hitting .440 to put the match away.
Carter added four more kills in the final set, hitting .667, while Nembhard added three. K-State served up three aces in set three and finished with six on the night.
Teana Adams-Kaonohi dished out 32 assists to go with seven digs. Mackenzie Morris had a team-high 11 digs and two aces. Morris, a freshman libero, has led the Wildcats in digs in all 13 matches this season.
TCU was paced by Julia Adams' seven kills. Mykayla Myers added six while hitting a team-best .308. Dani Dennison recorded a match-high 15 digs.
The Wildcats and Frogs wrap up the two-match series on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Fans can also listen to Rob Voelker call the action on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and at K-StateSports.com/watch.
