CARY, N.C. – In the semifinals of the ACC Championship, the Duke women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to top-seeded Florida State at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., to end an impressive fall 2020 campaign.
With the loss, Duke ends the fall season with a 7-4-2 ledger, while Florida State advances to the ACC Championship, improving to 10-0-0 on the season.
"It is a great learning experience for us," said Duke head coach Robbie Church. "It is a humbling experience. It is not a 4-0 game. We had a choice. We could have sat back like a lot of teams do against Florida State, but that is not who we are. We play to win the game. We came to press them, we played high and that left some space in behind us."
For the eighth time this season, Duke failed to register a goal in the first half as the Blue Devils were outshot by a 7-5 margin.
Duke went on the attack early in the first half as senior Karlie Paschall broke free down the right side of the pitch, sending a shot that Florida State goalkeeper Cristina Roque narrowly saved in a diving effort.
Then 22 minutes later, junior Delaney Graham got away from the Florida State center backs into the open field; however, she was fouled from behind, which resulted in a free kick for the Blue Devils. The kick was attempted by senior Caitlin Cosme, who sent a shot towards the bottom left of the net, which was saved.
At the 30:40 mark of the match, Florida State broke the scoreless tie as Jody Brown blasted a shot from the right side of the field to the far post, past Duke goalkeeper Ruthie Jones.
The Blue Devils' best opportunity of the first half came with less than two minutes remaining when Mackenzie Pluck lobbed a high shot towards the right corner of the goal that was just saved.
Florida State came out aggressive in the second half, notching three tallies and increasing its lead to 4-0. The Seminoles outshot the Blue Devils by a 12-8 margin for the half.
Duke's best opportunity of the second half came 16 minutes in when Paschall received a pass from Graham and fired a wide-open shot from the right side of the pitch, which was saved.
"The disappointing part was the second half," added Church. "The two goals on set plays is very, very disappointing. That took the wind out of our sails. We have to learn from this game. Like I said earlier, it is a humbling experience. Our kids are tough and they will be back. We will be better for this."
With 79 minutes played in the match, senior Taylor Mitchell has amassed 7,055 minutes played over four years, which marks 10th on the Duke all-time minutes played ledger.
Mitchell, and the remainder of Duke's senior class, will have the opportunity to compete for an NCAA Tournament bid during the 2021 spring season.
