Summary

  • Director Christopher Landon has exited Scream 7 amid backstage difficulties surrounding the movie.
  • The studio fired actress Melissa Barrera after she made social media posts supporting the citizens of Palestine, sparking condemnation towards Spyglass from over 1,000 artists.
  • Barrera's co-star Jenna Ortega will also not be returning to the project.

Scream 7 has lost its director. The upcoming slasher sequel, which was set to be helmed by Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon, has been beset with difficulties. Melissa Barrera, who led the previous two installments in the franchise, was fired from the project after sharing social media posts supporting the citizens of Palestine amid the Israel-Hamas war, a decision from the studio that more than 1,000 different artists have signed a statement to condemn. After that news broke, it was also revealed that her co-star Jenna Ortega would not be returning stemming from a pay dispute.

On Twitter, Christopher Landon wrote a post officially announcing his exit from the upcoming Scream 7. Check it out below:

Landon reveals that he "formally exited" the project "weeks ago" and that his "heart did break for everyone involved." While he was "honored to have even the briefest moment basking in [Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's] glow," he hopes that Craven's legacy "thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world" without his involvement.

Is Scream 7 Going To Happen?

In addition to the shocking Scream 7 cast exits, the creative team for the movie experienced a massive creative overhaul during its early development. Landon was originally brought in to replace directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who helmed the previous two movies in the franchise. Screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick were still on hand to pen the overhauled screenplay for Landon's iteration of the movie, but it is unclear where that version of the script stands at the time of writing.

Scream (2022) and Scream 6 introduced Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega's characters, sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter.

It seems probable that Scream 7 will still be made. The sequel is still a strong financial prospect as the 2022 movie made $138.9 million off a $24 million budget and its follow-up made $169 million off its roughly $35 million budget. There are also several stars who could possibly still return depending on the status of their contracts, including Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as twins Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin.

However, this Scream 7 backstage drama is compounded by the controversy surrounding Neve Campbell's Scream 6 exit after salary negotiations for the returning star stalled during the development of that installment. Any continuation of the franchise now comes with multiple sources of baggage, so it's possible that the studio will delay development of the movie until such time that either some of these issues can be resolved or public fervor around them has died down. If a replacement for Landon is announced quickly, though, that could be an indication that the studio intends to move forward sooner rather than later.
