FC Cincinnati players are putting the finishing touches on their 2023 season with final meetings with club staff and, for many, their final appearances with local media until 2024.
For some, the day might be their defacto final "farewell" to Cincinnati before moving abroad, which has increasingly been acknowledged during the day's interviews. Some turnover is always expected, it's also fair to say.
FC Cincinnati players, staff and media are all under the same roof Tuesday at the Mercy Health Training Center in Milford for the final time in 2023. The season, its quirks, highs and lows are being dissected as players are interviewed one by one. That process started around 9:30 a.m. and will continue into the afternoon.
Here's what's happened so far:
Aaron Boupendza
Nick Hagglund
Nick Hagglund shed his crutches Saturday at TQL Stadium in order to lift the ceremonial shield prior to the game. In fact, he tossed them away. The fans loved it. In fact, he's still using them, as well as a brace. He said he expects to be using some of those supports for at least another week or two. Pressed on when he could conceivably return to on-field work, Hagglund suggested March but that probably wasn't a firm commitment.
Yuya Kubo
Kubo said he'll take his offseason holiday in Japan and decide later what his future holds. It seemed as though he might have been addressing his future at the club in a social media post following Saturday's loss. We'll have to wait and see for year-end roster decisions for clarity there, it seems.
Matt Miazga
Luciano Acosta
The 2023 Landon Donovan MLS MVP takes a final bow (of sorts). He said he's had trouble sleeping since Saturday's loss to Columbus Crew and is ready to move forward into his offseason. But those were just his opening remarks.
Brandon Vazquez
Are we seeing the last of Brandon Vazquez, and will he be one of the players FCC has to replace as a result of Vazquez's personal success as well as the club's achievements? That's been the expectation for months.
Alec Kann
"You have to catch lightning in a bottle to win MLS Cup," Kann said. "Unfortunately, no one remembers who won the Supporters Shield."
Kann gave some insightful comments on the 2023 season while also confirming he's under contract for 2024. Kann said he still feels like he can contribute as a starter in MLS.
Obinna Nwobodo
The foot injury Obinna Nwobodo suffered in the second match of the MLS Cup playoffs took center stage during his 10-minute window for questions and answers.
He said Tuesday he knew when he came off the field Nov. 4 at Red Bull Arena, holding a cleat in-hand, that he knew he "wouldn't be able to manage it." Nwobodo also conceded he played in pain as a substitute in Saturday's Eastern Conference final against Columbus Crew, and he indicated his recovery process is still ongoing.
