In a significant blow to Xi Jinping's plans, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday that her country would be withdrawing from the ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) during her meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The Italian PM communicated the intention to quit the project to her counterpart on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi even as Li made a last-ditch attempt to persuade her government to rethink. Earlier this month, Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, expressed that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreement with China had fallen short of Italian expectations. Additionally, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto recently characterized Italy's initial decision to join the BRI as a "spontaneous and regrettable action." Prime Minister Meloni herself has frequently stated her belief that the agreement was a significant error that she intends to rectify.
