I have spent the last year plus trash-talking the final seasons of The Goldbergs, which is now so bad that the creator has disowned it and even his mother, the real Beverly Goldberg, can’t stand it. The show, however, has announced that it will be coming to a close at the end of the season, so I feel no real urgency to continue piling on.
I will also note that my issues with the show have everything to do with a network that renewed the series beyond its expiration date and its showrunners, Chris Bishop and Alex Barnow, who are largely responsible for tanking the series. The actors — or at least those who remain — have always been great, and have done the best that they can with the writing with which they have to work. Most of those kids have grown up on that set, and they all appear to be excellent people in real life (Sean Giambrone is as adorably nerdy as his character; so is Troy Gentile; and Hayley Orrantia and Sam Lerner are, well, just watch how spectacular they are together.
Wendi McLendon-Covey, meanwhile, bounced from one guest role to another for a decade before Bridesmaids and then The Goldbergs hit. She deserved a decade of steady work. She did not deserve to have Jeff Garlin as her work husband for the better part of those years, and I expect that she had to shoulder the brunt of his assholery while also protecting the younger cast members from it.
I’m sure no one was happier about his exit than McLendon-Covey, and she seemed to suggest as much in an interview with Andy Cohen on Sirius XM. “That was a long time coming. It was like, ‘OK, OK, someone’s finally listening to us.’”
McLendon-Covey also agreed with Cohen, who suggested that his departure was the culmination of a number of complaints before she asked if they could switch subjects, telling Cohen that she is “exhausted by that topic and the PTSD of it all … I just feel like the less people know about that, the better. No one benefits from knowing anything.”
Fair.
The best news is that, after The Goldbergs ends in May, McLendon-Covey will not remain unemployed. She and the phenomenal Alison Tolman have joined the cast of St. Denis Medical, an NBC mockumentary-style comedy from another The Office vet, Justin Spitzer (American Auto, Superstore).
