New exit, lanes opening at I-285 and GA-400 interchange on Monday - WSB Atlanta

ATLANTA — A new exit and new lanes will open at the Interstate 285 and Georgia State Road 400 interchange early Monday morning.

Drivers on I-285 eastbound will have a big change to navigate if trying to get to Glenridge Drive or GA-400 northbound or southbound.

The new exit will be before Roswell Road, not after, like the current setup. This means drivers will be forced to make the decision to exit much earlier.

Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach spoke with Georgia Department of Transportation on Friday who said the change is expected to eliminate much of the merging and weaving across lanes to get to the exits.

“Separating out that last-minute decision will make things much better and think it will reduce congestion in this area,” said GDOT spokesperson Kyle Collins.

Drivers say they hope the change will make things less confusing and safer.

“There are too many exits too close together, so have too many people trying to get off of the road, others trying to merge into the traffic that creates chaos,” said Stephanie Tarrer, who lives nearby.

GDOT says the opening will happen overnight Sunday into Monday and be fully open by 5 a.m., before the morning rush hour. Drivers should look for additional signage and lane markings to remind them the exit has been pushed back much farther. “It may take few days for them to adjust, so encourage folks to keep their head up and be alert,” said Collins.
