Georgia baseball did not have their best day from the plate on Tuesday as the Dawgs got eliminated by Alabama in the SEC Tournament.
The Dawgs should still get into the NCAA Tournament, but it would have been nice to see them build some momentum after finishing the regular season so poorly.
A weather delay put this game on the back burner to start the day. Then after three innings, another delay swept in, and Georgia could never get going offensively.
Hopefully, having the next week off will help the Dawgs refocus and regroup, so it won’t be another quick exit when they find out what regional they’ll play in.
Georgia baseball got eliminated on Day 1 of the SEC Tournament.
Alabama got hot right away, scoring five runs in the first two innings. The Tide scored three runs in the first and two in the second off of Georgia starting pitcher Luke Wagner.
Wagner lasted just 1.1 innings giving up five runs on four hits, and he walked two batters. Head coach Scott Stricklin pulled him and put Chandler Marsh in to relieve him. Marsh pitched 1.2 innings, recording two strikeouts and walking one batter. He didn’t give up any hits or runs, and that is when Georgia’s pitching began to improve.
Jaden Woods was the third pitcher to come in for the Dawgs, and he lasted four innings, doing a great job on the mound to keep Alabama from scoring any more runs. He gave up one hit, struck out seven, and walked two while on the mound.
Jack Gowen was the final pitcher as he came in as the closer. He pitched the final two innings and did his job, giving up one hit and striking out two batters to give Georgia a chance offensively to score.
Georgia scored in the second inning and didn’t score again until the eighth. Connor Tate hit a two-run homer to make it 5-3, but that is all the Dawgs had offensively. It wasn’t a pretty game at the plate, but Georgia did fight for it.
Alabama’s pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts and when that happens, it’s hard to have much offensive production. This game was a learning opportunity for the Dawgs and it’s now time for them to step up for the postseason.
Some Georgia fans feel like this team could be so much better, and while they had a decent year, the last month of baseball hasn’t gone great for the Dawgs. It’s never great to see your team struggle down the stretch of the regular season.
Georgia baseball will either step up or get sent home because there are no more chances at the next stage of the season. You either win and you keep fighting for a national title or you end your season.
