The conservative host is set to leave the ABC series after four seasons—and with two years left on her contract—at the end of July.

Update (July 1, 11:30 A.M.): Meghan McCain confirmed Thursday that she will leave her co-hosting tenure at The View after four seasons. At the top of the episode, she announced her departure and plans to reside in Washington D.C. with her family:

“I am just going to rip the band-aid off. I am here to tell all of you, my wonderful co-hosts and the viewers at home that this is going to be my last season here at The View. I will be here through the end of July to finish out the season with all of you, which I’m grateful for. This was not an easy decision. It took a lot of thought and counsel and prayer and talking to my family and my close friends. Look, COVID has changed the world for all of us. And it changed the way, at least for me, the way I am looking at life, the way I’m living my life, the way I want my life to look like.”

McCain then recalled how she left New York at the pandemic’s start and later welcomed her newborn daughter, Liberty, in Washington D.C. “I think as any new mom knows, when I think about where I want Liberty to have her first steps and her first words...I just have this really wonderful life here that ultimately I felt like I didn’t want to leave,” she explained.

She continued, “On a professional note, this show is one of the hands-down, greatest, most exhilarating, wonderful privileges of my entire life. I have had so many amazing experiences in my life and this is definitely one of the top. It is a privilege to work alongside such strong, brilliant, intelligent, incredible broadcasters like the four of you. You are the most talented women on all of television, hands-down. And it has been so incredible to be able to do this with you.

“Before I came onto the show, I didn’t want to join the show, as I think I’ve talked about in the past. And it was my dad [late Sen. John McCain] who encouraged me to do it. He said that I could never give up on an opportunity to work on such an iconic show and to work with Whoopi Goldberg. And he was right. It was one of the last things he told me to do before he died. It is not easy to leave, but I feel like this is just the right decision for me at this moment.”

McCain then warned, “And I will still be here another month. So if you guys wanna fight a little bit more, we’ve got four more weeks.”

ABC News said in a statement about McCain's exit:

“For the past four years, Meghan McCain has brought her fierce determination and vast political knowledge and experience to The View. She recently came to us with her decision to depart the show at the end of this season, a difficult choice that she made for her and her family that we respect and understand. We wish the best for Meghan as she plans her next chapter, and thank her for the passion and unique voice that she shared with us and our viewers each day.”

Meghan McCain, conservative pundit and daughter of late senator John McCain, may be bidding farewell to her time at The View. According to a new Daily Mail report, McCain is set to announce her departure from the daytime talk show during Thursday’s episode—with two years left on her current contract. “We have tried to keep her, but she is adamant that now is the right time for her to leave,” a Disney source told the outlet. “She will finish at the end of July 2021.” Vanity Fair has reached out to The View for comment.

McCain has been the reigning Republican voice on The View since joining the show in October 2017, one year after Donald Trump’s election. Over the course of her four seasons there, she’s regularly feuded with liberal cohost Joy Behar on air. The source told the Daily Mail that McCain’s cohosts—Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro—were “not yet aware that Meghan has resigned” from The View.

Reports circulated back in July 2019 that McCain was considering leaving her post on the show. Sources told the Daily Beast at the time that she felt like a “caged animal.” Said one friend of McCain’s: “It’s getting to the point where it’s not worth the emotional toll every week.” Speculation that McCain would resign came nearly two months after a tense appearance on NBC’s Late Night, where Seth Meyers questioned the host about her “dangerous” attempts to link Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s comments to a mass shooting. “Are you her publicist?” McCain asked at one point.

In perhaps one of her final impassioned speeches on The View, McCain spoke out against Gwen Berry, a U.S. hammer thrower and activist who appeared to turn away from the American flag in protest during the Olympic trials. On Tuesday’s episode McCain argued that while she had an “understanding” of why athletes protest in the United States, her “relationship with the flag isn’t allowed anymore.” She later added, “I will die on this hill—that it is not appropriate or patriotic to go to a foreign country where you’re supposed to be representing America and act like it’s just about you. It’s not about you, it’s about all of us.”
