Rose, competing for Samoa, bowed out in the preliminary round with a throw of 61.72 meters. The field comprised 32 throwers with the top 12 moving on to Saturday's final. Rose needed a throw of at least 62.93 meters to reach the final.
He set his career best, 67.48, during a meet at the University of Arizona in May.
Rose was attempting to become the first Chippewa to earn an Olympic medal since 1988. Former CMU great Dan Majerle earned a bronze medal with the U.S. men's basketball team in Seoul in '88.
It was the second Olympic appearance for Rose, who placed 29th in the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Rose, who earned a degree in English from CMU in 2014, was an All-American as a Chippewa in 2011 when he placed fifth in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. He is a native of West Branch and now lives in Grand Rapids with his wife, Samantha (Stein), a former CMU high jumper.
Under Olympic rules, Rose is permitted to compete for Samoa because his father, Ross, is a native of the small island country (pop. 202,506) located some 2,500 miles south and west of Hawaii.
