NEW ULM — City and county law enforcement vehicles from the Brown, Lyon, Redwood, and Renville (BLRR) County Emergency Response Unit (ERU) filled much of the parking lot of the former Alliance Bank building, 322 North Minnesota St. on Thursday.

No cause for alarm. The situation at hand was a monthly training drill for the 17-member unit that includes medics, dispatchers, a negotiator and responders equipped with specialized weapons and tactical skills. They are available to any Brown, Redwood, Renville, or Lyon County law enforcement agency encountering a critical incident that exceeds their capabilities and standard police response.

BLRR ERU Commander Jason Jacobson of the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office said the training went well.

“We trained on hostage rescue, building searches and tactics,” Jacobson said. “We appreciate the bank allowing us to use the property. It’s a nice facility.”

Brown County Sheriff’s Office Deputy and BLRR ERU member Derek Shaw said the unit usually trains in abandoned farm places, houses, and businesses, running scenario-based training and hostage negotiations.

Alliance Bank Regional President Bob Reuter said the New Ulm Police Department reached out to him that they were looking for a place to train.

“I took them through the building and they liked it,” Reuter said. “Most of the training was inside the building. Scenarios began outside and worked their way inside. They did multiple scenarios. We were very glad to donate the building for such a good cause. They said the building worked extremely well for their purposes.”

Established in 1992, the ERU is used for high-risk search and arrest warrants, situations involving barricaded suspects, and other incidents where safety is critical and deployment happens on short notice.

The ERU is committed to providing the greatest degree of safety protection for all persons involved, including officers, victims, and suspects.

At the same time, the ERU seeks a peaceful solution to each incident, while upholding and adhering to the highest standards for police conduct and professionalism.

In addition to monthly training, the ERU does annual three-day training at Camp Ripley, a military and civilian training facility operated by the Minnesota National Guard near Little Falls.

ERU training allows the group to deal with anything from an active shooter to a hostage scenario.
