A LeBron James-led team will play an elimination game in the first round of the playoffs for the first time after the Suns defeated the Lakers 115-85 on Tuesday to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven, first-round series. Phoenix led by at least 20 points for the final 31 minutes of Game 5, defeating the defending champions for the second time in three days.
The Suns head to Los Angeles for Game 6 on Thursday with a chance to eliminate James in the first round of the playoffs for the first time in 15 first-round series.
"They pretty much just kicked our ass," James said. "There’s nothing else really to say."
Lakers forward Markieff Morris said they need to "show that championship DNA" in Game 6.
“There’s no more, if we lose another one, talking about what we could of (done), what we should’ve done," he said. "This is it.”
The Suns were led by Devin Booker, who registered 30 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the victory. James attempted to carry the Lakers ― who were without star center Anthony Davis, who was out with a groin strain ― with 24 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
James, who said it's "literally win or go home," also said he'll prepare for Game 6 as if Davis won't play.
"If something changes we’ll go from there but I’m preparing as if he’s not," James said.
