Kendal Ewell Begins Play In MLB's Appalachian League On Thursday
The Appalachian League is a collegiate summer league that is part of the Major League Baseball and USA Baseball Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP).
RICHMOND, Ky. – EKU freshman outfielder Kendal Ewell will begin play in the Appalachian League tonight when his Bluefield Ridge Runners play at Kingsport.
After serving as a rookie-level league in Minor League Baseball since 1963, the Appy League transitioned in 2020 to a collegiate summer league as part of the Major League Baseball and USA Baseball Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP), a pathway for amateur baseball players in the United States. The league, which will feature rising freshmen and sophomores, will also be an integral part of the identification and development process for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and other future national teams.
The league is comprised of 10 clubs in Bluefield, West Virginia; Bristol, Virginia; Burlington, North Carolina; Danville, Virginia; Elizabethton, Tennessee; Greeneville, Tennessee; Johnson City, Tennessee; Kingston, Tennessee; Princeton, West Virginia; and Pulaski, Virginia.
Ewell, a 6-foot-3 freshman, earned a spot on the Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman Team. He hit .303 in 2021, second-best among Colonels. He had seven home runs, 34 RBIs and 31 runs. He tied with two others for the team lead in walks. He was second on the team with 11 multi-RBI games.
The Calumet City, Illinois native hit for the cycle against North Dakota State on May 20. Ewell had a single in the first inning, a solo home run in the third, a double in the fourth and then legged out a triple on a ball hit to the gap in right center in the bottom of the sixth. He finished 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs.
Thursday's game between the Ridge Runners and the Axmen will begin at 7 p.m. Appalachian League games will be live streamed online with audio feeds. Although not ready for opening weekend, all games will eventually have a video stream online.
The Appy League regular season will end on August 7. The league championship is scheduled for the week of August 9.
