Box Score
USAFA, Colo. – The VMI lacrosse team fell to host Air Force Academy by a score of 18-4 Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The Keydets (1-8, 0-5) scored one goal in each period, with Scout Ripley leading the team with two goals on the day. The Falcons (3-7, 2-3 SoCon) started quick and did not let up en route to 18 in the win.
The first period started with fast attacking by the Falcons, who scored six unanswered goals. With three seconds left in the period, Jon Fant scored a goal to put VMI on the board.
VMI goalie Bill Osteen logged five saves in the second period, but Air Force added four goals to its total. After a Falcon turnover caused by Aaron Ward, AJ Stamos scored his third goal of the season off an assist by Fant to bring the score to a 10-2 deficit at halftime.
"Credit to Air Force," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "They outplayed us in nearly every facet of the game. They are an athletic and scrappy bunch and it showed with the large possession margin. We had way too many turnovers and that led to sustained offensive pressure by Air Force. When we did get the ball on our offensive end, we were not disciplined and didn't finish the ball. Our young group continues to learn and to be hungry and humble. I very much look forward to getting back to work tomorrow to continue to teach and develop this group at practice."
Ripley scored his first goal of the game off an assist by AJ Stamos in a man-up opportunity late in the third period. Ripley's second goal of the game was with less than a minute left on the clock off an assist by Fant, his second assist of the game.
Ethan Grandolfo led the Falcons with six goals for the game, with Ben Ward and Brenden Crouse tallying five and four goals, respectively.
Osteen finished with 13 saves on the game. Air Force goalies Jason Rose and Noah Schwab earned seven saves total.
The Keydets will be back on the road next Saturday for the last Southern Conference match of the year to face Mercer. Faceoff is set for an 11 a.m. start in Macon, Georgia and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
