ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team got its Liberty League schedule started on Saturday afternoon, splitting two games with Rochester Institute of Technology at the RIT Baseball Complex. The Dutchmen took game one by a 6-1 score, but could not complete the sweep in a 6-5 game-two loss.

Game 1: Union 6, RIT 1

Junior James Salemme (2-1) put together another excellent outing to lead Union in the first game of the day, allowing one run in six innings as the Dutchmen took the front end of the doubleheader. The junior gave up only three hits and struck out seven in earning the victory.

Senior Matt Toy led the offense with a 3-for-4 day, scoring a pair of runs. Senior Kevin Chaimowitz drove in a pair and scored once, while classmate William Bellamy had two hits and one RBI.

The Dutchmen used a two-out rally to break the ice in the third inning. After the first two batters were retired, senior Joey Palko singled and classmate Colin Kelly walked before Chaimowitz launched a two-run triple to right. Bellamy followed with an RBI single, and just like that Union had a 3-0 lead.

Union tacked on two more runs in the fourth as Palko walked with the bases loaded and Kelly followed with a sacrifice fly, and senior Jack Koch added one more run in the fifth with an RBI double that scored Toy.

Game 2: RIT 6, Union 5

Union looked to be in good shape in game two with a 4-1 lead entering the seventh inning, but RIT scored five runs over the final three innings to walk off with a win.

Palko had a big game for Union, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Kelly added a 3-for-5 effort with one run batted in.

After RIT got on the board in the bottom of the first, sophomore Kevin Dewing retired 12 batters in a row and allowed the Union offense to get going. Chaimowitz tied the game in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, then Union struck for three more in the fifth on a Koch RBI single followed by back-to-back RBI doubles off the bats of Palko and Kelly.

The Tigers got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh, then took the lead in the eighth with a two-out rally that culminated with a bases-loaded walk and a hit batter that forced in another run.

Palko kept Union alive in the top of the ninth with a clutch two-out single that scored sophomore pinch runner Joe Panuccio, but RIT returned the favor with a two-out hit of their own in the bottom half, as Ian Libby singled home the game-winning run to give RIT a split.

Dewing pitched well despite receiving a no-decision, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out six in seven innings of work. Sophomore Jason Goldblum (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run in one-third of an inning.

Union and RIT will complete their four-game series tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
