BATON ROUGE – The LSU volleyball team fell in four sets Thursday evening to Arkansas in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center by scores of 25-16, 23-25, 21-25, and 20-25.
The Tigers fall to 3-8 on the season while Arkansas moves to 11-4. The two teams will face off again on Friday at noon and the match with air on the SEC Network.
The Tigers were back in action in the PMAC for the first time since last October and quickly found their rhythm on their home court with explosive offense to begin the first set. After LSU took the first set thogh, Arkansas took the following three to win the match.
Libero Raigen Cianciulli made history tonight for the Tigers, becoming the all-time digs leader in program history when she recorded her ninth dig of the match in the second set. She finished with a match-high 17 digs.
Hannah Brister racked up a match-high 13 kills and also added six digs for the night, while Taylor Bannister put down 12 kills and six digs. Paige Flickinger also added 11 kills and eight digs.
Whitney Foreman and Anita Anwusi both contributed seven kills on the match for the Tigers.
Arkansas' Jillian Gillen and Taylor Head each had 12 kills to lead the Razorbacks. Both had double-doubles with 12 and 14 digs, respectively.
Arkansas out blocked LSU, 10-5. Maggie Cartwright of Arkansas led the match with eight block assists.
How it happened
Set 1
- The Tigers were able to start the offense early in first set with a kill from Taylor Bannister to take the 2-1 lead. Kills from Whitney Foreman and Paige Flickinger took the score to 4-1 over the Razorbacks. LSU added a 4-0 scoring run to take the 9-2 lead and forced Arkansas to take their first timeout of the set.
- Flickinger kept the offense going for the Tigers out of the timeout with a kill to increase the lead, 12-3 over Arkansas. Karli Rose was able to get in on the action and added a quick kill to make it 13-5.
- Arkansas was able to string together a few points, but Hannah Brister tallied a big kill to move the LSU lead, 14-8.
- Flickinger added another kill to increase the LSU lead, 19-12 over the Razorbacks late in the set. After a 3-0 scoring run that allowed the Tigers to take an eight-point lead, 20-12, the Razorbacks used their final timeout of the set.
- Bannister continued the explosive offense for the Tigers with a big kill from the back row to take the first set victory, 25-16 over Arkansas.
Set 2
- Foreman added two kills quick in the second set to take an early lead, 2-0, followed by Brister who tallied a kill to move the score 4-1 over the Razorbacks.
- The Razorbacks added a 4-0 scoring run to take their first lead of the day over the Tigers, 11-9. Brister added a kill to even the set at 13 while the two teams continued to battle the lead back and forth.
- LSU added a 3-0 scoring run to even the score at 18 behind a block from Rose and Anita Anwusi, this forced Arkansas to take their first timeout of the set. The Tigers were able to even the score again at 21 behind a Bannister kill.
- The Razorbacks took the two-point lead, 24-22, over the Tigers and forced their final timeout of the set. Despite battling the lead off one another throughout the set LSU couldn't close it out and fell 23-25.
Set 3
- The Razorbacks were able to take a 6-4 lead early in the third set, but a kill from Flickinger was able to put the Tigers within one. The Tigers went on a 3-0 scoring run behind an Anwusi kill to take the momentum from Arkansas, 7-6.
- Arkansas was able to tie the score at 10 but a Foreman kill established the 11-10 lead. The two battled, but an ace from Emmaline Walters was able to tie the score at 13.
- The Razorbacks took the lead, 18-16, but a kill from Brister inched the Tigers within one of tying the set. The Tigers weren't able to shift the momentum and Arkansas took the 20-17 lead and forced LSU's first timeout of the set.
- After the timeout Brister was able to add a massive kill to put the Tigers two closer to tying the Razorbacks, 20-18. The Razorbacks were able to keep the momentum from the Tigers though and increased their lead, 23-20 and forced LSU to use their last timeout. Although the Tigers tried to regain the momentum late in the set, they weren't able to overcome the deficit and fell, 21-25.
Set 4
- In the fourth set the Tigers were able to take an early lead over the Razorbacks behind kills from Bannister and Flickinger. The two teams tied at five, but LSU was able to capitalize on an Arkansas error to take 6-5 lead.
- LSU increased their lead 8-6 with a kill from Anwusi that shifted the momentum for the Tigers. Brister followed it up with another kill to take a two-point lead, 9-7, over the Razorbacks.
- Arkansas took a 12-10 lead and forced LSU to use their first timeout of the set. After the timeout Flickinger tallied a kill to try and cut into the Arkansas lead.
- The Razorbacks recorded a 4-0 scoring run, 17-12, that forced LSU to use their final timeout of the set. Anwusi was able to break up the Arkansas run which led to a 4-0 LSU run, trying to cut into the 19-16 Arkansas lead. The run forced the Razorbacks to use their first timeout. The Tigers weren't able to bounce back late in the fourth set and fell 20-25.
