PALM DESERT, Calif. – Oregon got solid play across the board to sit in fourth place at 10 under after the opening round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Friday at the Classic Club.

Tom Gueant shot a 5-under 67 to put himself in solo second place, just two shots off the lead, while Nate Stember and Yuki Moriyama join him in the top 20 after shooting under par rounds.

How It Happened: Gueant was dialed in from the start, opening with three pars before making three birdies in a four-hole stretch from holes 4-6 to get to 3 under. After making double bogey at the par-4 11th for his only dropped shots of the day, Gueant bounced back in a big way, holing a wedge shot on the par-4 13th for eagle and following with another one at the par-5 14th. He ended his round with four straight pars to shoot 67.

Nate Stember got off to a little bit of a rough start with bogeys on both par-3s on the front side to go along with a birdie to put him 1 over through six. He went bogey-free for the rest of the day, though, shooting a 3-under 33 on the back nine with birdies at 10, 13 and 14 to shoot a 3-under 69.

Yuki Moriyama turned in a clean bogey-free 2-under 70 to sit in (place). He got off to a solid start, making birdies on two of his first five holes to get to 2 under where he stayed for the rest of the day after making 13 consecutive pars to end the round.

Owen Avrit had a bumpy opening nine, making a pair of birdies but four bogeys to shoot 2 over going out. He found a little more of a rhythm on the back, shooting 2 under highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 14th to finish even par for the round. Craig Ronne shot a 2-over 74, while Jake Sollon shot a 4-over 76, competing as an individual.

Oregon is just four shots behind opening-round leader Kansas, which sits at 14 under, while the Jayhawks' Luke Kluver leads Gueant by two shots at 7 under.

Quotable: Head coach Casey Martin
"It was better today. The guys got some putts to drop and we had a nice stretch on the back nine. Just have to get comfortable shooting low scores. We can do it."
