Next on the Tee: Border Olympics
After returning to tournament play last week, the University of Michigan men's golf team continues its season with a trip to Laredo, Texas, on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 22-23) for Houston's Border Olympics. The two-day, 54-hole competition will be played at the Laredo Country Club. Scoring will be five players, count the four lowest scores. The course is scheduled to be set up as a par 72 at 7,375 yards.
The Border Olympics Field
There will be 19 teams competing at the Border Olympics, including: Abilene Christian, Arkansas Little Rock, Baylor, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Houston, Houston Baptist, Illinois State, Kent State, Lamar, Louisiana, Louisiana-Monroe, Michigan, New Mexico State, Rice, Sam Houston State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas-San Antonio.

The Border Olympics Lineup
Michigan will travel a five-member starting group to the Border Olympics. Traveling to Laredo will include graduate student Brent Ito, senior Charlie Pilon, junior Patrick Sullivan, and freshmen Will Anderson and Jack O'Donnell.
Wolverine Bites
• After having the remainder of the 2020 spring season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic following the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 7-8), U-M played its second event in two weeks after nearly a year away from tournament play. Last season, under new head coach Zach Barlow at the helm of the Wolverines, the Maize and Blue played in seven events, posting a season-best fourth-place finish at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate (Oct. 21-22, 2019).
• In his first career start in the No. 1 position at last week's Mobile Bay Invitational, Patrick Sullivan led the Wolverines, posting his first career top-25 individual finish after tying for 21st with a career-low 215 (-1). After opening with rounds of 75 and 73, he found himself tied for 47th. In the final round, Sullivan posted four birdies and an eagle to card a career-low 67 (-5) -- his first career sub-70 round -- to jump 26 spots to his career-best finish.
• Brent Ito, who will make his season debut at the Border Olympics, returns for a fifth and graduate year after the NCAA allowed an extra year of eligibility following the cancelation of the remainder of last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a senior, Ito was having a career year as he led U-M with a 72.67 scoring average -- which was nearly two strokes fewer than any other season in Ann Arbor. He earned All-Big Ten second team honors -- the first conference accolade of his career, the 21st in program history and the first for a Wolverine since 2018 (Kyle Mueller).
• Charlie Pilon has played in 28 career events and he has started the last 26 straight, spanning more than three seasons. After leading the Wolverines in two events last season, he highlighted that by winning the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate with a career-low 205 (-8) total. Pilon had six sub-par rounds, including a U-M-low 67 (-4) in the first round at the Royal Oaks and finished with a career-low 73.00 per round.
• After making their Michigan and collegiate debuts at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, freshmen Will Anderson and Jack O'Donnell will start at the Border Olympics. In his debut, Anderson tied for 72nd (229), while O'Donnell tied for 80th (235). Fellow rookie Jude Kim also made his debut in Mobile and played as an individual, finishing 86th (257).
• Michigan welcomes four freshmen this season: Will Anderson (Portage, Mich.), Ben Hoagland (Evansville, Ind.), Jude Kim (Plantation, Fla.) and Jack O'Donnell (Cohasset, Mass.). Anderson earned MIGCA All-State Division I first-team honors (2018, '19) before his senior year was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During his career, he was a two-time individual qualifier for the MHSAA Division I Finals. Hoagland was a two-time qualifier for the IHSAA State Finals, before his senior season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was a two-time SIAC honoree (2018, '19) as well as a three-time Academic All-SIAC (2017, '18, '19). Kim played at American Heritage School and helped it to the FHSAA Class 2A championship (2016), followed by three straight runner-up titles (2017, '18, '19). O'Donnell led Boston College HS to the 2017 Massachusetts Division I State Championship; first in school history. Individually, he was the medalist runner-up (2017; 69, -1).
