ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team earned an 86-82 victory over in-state rival Michigan State on Tuesday (Feb. 16) evening at Crisler Center. The Wolverines led for all but 44 seconds of the game, it was the third straight win for U-M in the series and marks the first time U-M has won three straight against MSU since winning four straight from Dec. 30, 1999-Jan. 2, 2002.
Junior Naz Hillmon notched her fifth career 30-point game and fourth this season with a team-best 31 points, while Leigha Brown had her 16th career and sixth 20-point game as a Wolverines, scoring 20 points on the evening. Graduate student Akienreh Johnson was the third and final U-M player to record a double-digit outing with 11 points and team-best nine rebounds. Leigha Brown and Amy Dilk handed out four assists each.
Michigan outrebounded Michigan State, 37-32, behind nine boards from Johnson and seven from Hillmon, while Hailey Brown and Maddie Nolan added five apiece.
Michigan and MSU played an even first six minutes of the first quarter before the Wolverines stifled the Spartan offense for more three minutes of play and took a 22-14 lead into the second quarter, highlighted by 12 points from Hillmon.
Michigan State found a 7-0 run early in the second quarter before a Nolan layup stopped the streak with the Wolverines leading, 27-21. Late in the second quarter, Michigan had an offensive strike against MSU, going on an 11-0 run capped off with a Leigha Brown triple from the corner, to take a 46-30 advantage with 1:39 remaining. The Spartans added five final points but Michigan took a 46-35 lead into the halftime break behind 20 points from Hillmon and 10 from Leigha Brown.
After missing the first two shots of the third quarter, U-M made five straight shot attempts, with four points from Johnson, to take a 58-45 advantage. The Spartans looked to close the gap in the latter half of the third quarter, using a 12-5 scoring advantage to come within eight, 63-55, with 2:03 left in the stanza.
MSU closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run to make it a six-point game, 68-62, heading into the final 10 minutes of action at Crisler Center. With Hillmon and Leigha Brown on the bench due to foul trouble to start the fourth quarter, the Spartans used a three-pointer to come within three, 70-67, with 7:54 left in the contest.
Both teams saw a lull in scoring late in the fourth quarter before Leigha Brown dropped a shot from downtown, and Hillmon and Brown both found points in the paint to bring the U-M advantage back to 10, 79-69, with just over three minutes to play.
Five straight Spartan points puled them within five, 83-78, before they called a timeout with just under a minute to play.
The teams exchanged baskets on their next possessions before a Leigh Brown free throw with 15 seconds left sealed the victory.
Michigan returns to action Thursday (Feb. 18), when they take on No. 14-ranked Indiana in Bloomington. The game is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
