LOGAN, Utah –
The 22nd-ranked Boise State gymnastics team recorded its season high and claimed three event titles, upsetting No. 21 Utah State for the second-straight week, 196.400-195.325, at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, Saturday.Freshman Emily Lopez and sophomore Erin Elkabchi claimed their first-career victories on bars and floor, respectively, while senior Gabriela Cavinta registered her second-career win on beam.
"We had a great meet tonight," head coach Tina Bird said. "I'm very happy with our performance.
"Emily Lopez led the team on bars with her fantastic routine, and I was really proud of Gabby for nailing her beam routine a rotation after debuting on floor, as exhibition, for the first time in her career."
In addition to establishing an overall season high, Boise State also set season bests on both vault (48.925) and beam (49.150) en route to its fourth victory over a top-25 program in five meets this season. The Broncos also defeated Utah State, then No. 23, at home this past week, and earned wins over No. 13 Oregon State and No. 14 BYU in the first two meets of the season.
The Broncos increased their lead after each of the evening's four rotations, sweeping all four events.
Boise State began its evening on bars, an event in which the team ranks tied for sixth nationally, and Lopez earned the event title with a 9.900.
The Broncos moved into the top 25 on vault this week, and ultimately set a season high against the Aggies, led by 9.800s from juniors Hope Masiado and Samantha Smith and freshman Courtney Blackson.
The Broncos claimed their second event title of the evening with Elkabchi's career-high 9.850 on floor, and their third in the final rotation with Cavinta's 9.875 on beam.
Lopez (9.825), Elkabchi (9.850) and sophomore Adriana Popp (9.850) each tied their career highs on beam, helping the Broncos close the evening with another event season high.
The Broncos will hit the road again this upcoming week, traveling back to the Beehive State for a tri-meet at MRGC rival and 11th-ranked BYU. The meet, which will also feature Air Force, is slated to begin at 7 p.m., Friday (Feb. 19).
