In a year filled with cancelled events, travel bans, lockdowns and a global pandemic, the Trojans prevailed. Whether it be 18 CSCAA All-Americans, five Pac-12 individual titles or a CoSida Academic All-American diver, the USC swimming and diving program continued to impress.Throughout 2020, USC swimmers and divers were repeatedly recognized for their performance in both the pool and the classroom by the CSCAA, Pac-12 and CoSida.
In a season that was cut short due to coronavirus, 18 Trojans still managed to earn CSCAA All-American honors, a record number for the program. 12 swimmers and six divers were recognized including 14 first time honorees.
At the 2020 Pac-12 Championships, Louise Hansson and Laticia Transom combined for five individual titles. Hansson defended her conference crowns, winning the 100y fly (49.94), 200y fly (1:51.26) and 200y IM (1:54.09), while Transom picked up her first conference wins in the 100y (47.83) and 200y free (1:42.47). At the same event, the Trojans won two relay titles (400y free and 800y free) to help them to a third-place overall finish at the championships.
12 Trojans were recognized for their work in the classroom during the season and were named to the Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll in March. Any student athlete with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better that was at least one year into their studies was eligible to receive academic honors.
Men's diving team captain Henry Fusaro took home a handful of honors during 2020 including the Pac-12 Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Fusaro, a double major, boasted a 3.58 GPA, earning himself recognition as a CoSida Academic All-American (third team). In February, Fusaro was named the Pac-12 Men's Diver of the Week after winning three times during Trojan dual meets against California and Stanford.
After a stellar freshman diving campaign that included an NCAA bid on all three boards, Nike Agunbiade was named the Pac-12 Women's Freshman Diver of the Year. Along with Agunbiade was Louise Hansson who received the Women's Swimmer of the Year award after earning three individual and two relay titles at Pac-12's.
Jeremy Kipp, who spent eight years as an assistant at USC before becoming the head coach at Boise State and most recently at Northwestern, was named the head coach of the USC men's and women's swimming teams in May. Kipp returning to USC marked the beginning of a new era for the Trojans. Along with Kipp came the addition of Olympic gold medalist and former Stanford women's head coach Lea Maurer and former Trojan All-American Meghan Hawthorne.
Trojan Alumni in 2020:
Along with current student-athlete achievements, came the accomplishments of Trojan Alumni in 2020. From a Hall of Fame induction to being named the Breakout Swimmer of the Year by SwimSwam, cardinal and gold success was widespread.
After a grueling season of competition in the ISL Budapest bubble, two Trojans, Jeff Julian and Haley Anderson, celebrated a championship as part of the Cali Condors winning team. All-American Julian served as head coach for the Condors while Anderson represented the team in the pool.
USC Alum Dylan Carter became a force in the ISL in 2020. Carter set Trinidad and Tobago records in the 100 back (49.91), 100 free (46.56) and 100 fly (50.70) this ISL season, leaving him with seven national records in short course meters and nine more in long course meters. Carter was named the 2020 Male Central American and Caribbean Athlete of the Year by the Swammy Awards. Carter was also named the Sportsman of the Year by the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee.
Bruce Furniss, a two-time Olympic gold medal swimmer, 10-time world record holder and six-time NCAA champion who helped USC win national titles in 1976 and 1977, was one of four new inductees into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame, in May of 2020.
Finally, Trojan great Kasia Wasick received this year's Female Breakout Swimmer of the Year award, presented by SwimSwam. Wasick had a breakout year despite having already competed for Poland at three Olympic Games. Her 2020 breakout comes following a 2016 retirement and subsequent 2018 comeback. Wasick has wasted no time with her return, surging to the top of the world rankings in the 50 freestyle as 2nd fastest in the world this year and 7th fastest of all time. Her 2020 performance, however, served as a display of Wasick's longevity in the sport and was a true post-retirement breakout year.
