SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) erupted for a career-high 29 points, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to No. 3 Connecticut, 92-65, in its BIG EAST Conference opener in Walsh Gym on Tuesday.
The Pirates, playing in their fourth game in eight days, trailed by only eight points at the half, but a lengthy third-quarter Connecticut run put the contest out of reach.
Park-Lane was spectacular, tallying a game-high 29 points on 9-for-20 shooting and 9-for-10 from free-throw line. The point guard also dished out a team-high six assists against only two turnovers.
The Story:
Seton Hall played tough defense through the early goings of the first quarter, but UConn's defense and fast-break quickly caught up. Leading just 8-6 at the media break, the Huskies offense struck hard. In only 1:48, Connecticut went on a 13-2 run to grab a 21-8 advantage with 2:29 left in the first quarter.
The Pirates trailed by as many as 14 in the second quarter, but refused to allow another run, and with layups by Park-Lane and Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) on back-to-back possessions in the waning moments of the first half, The Hall closed its deficit to only eight points, 38-30, at halftime. Despite shooting just 35.3% from the floor in the first half, and a paltry 1-for-14 from three-point range, the Pirates found themselves still within striking distance after 20 minutes.
A jumper by Elmore only 1:10 into the third quarter cut UConn's lead to just six points, but the Huskies responded with a deafening 21-4 burst to give them a commanding 61-38 lead with 3:20 left in the third. UConn's Paige Bueckers and Olivia Nelson-Ododa combined for 26 points in the quarter alone. As a team, the Huskies shot 87.5% (14-for-16) as they pulled away in the third.
