The renumbering of exits on the Massachusetts Turnpike, Interstate 90, will get underway on Sunday Dec. 13.

The state Department of Transportation informed EZPass toll customers of the expected commencement in an email this week. Work is expected to take four weeks with crews out overnight from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The state is catching up to long-held federal standards with the switch from sequential exit numbers to new numbers that match mileposts. The idea is to make it easy for motorists to navigate, to know how long it is until the next exit and their estimated time of arrival.

The new numbers also match the systems in place in other states and allow for more accurate reporting of highway incidents, resulting in better navigation of emergency services.

For example, the current Exit 3 in Westfield will be designated Exit 41 because Westfield is 41 miles from the New York state line.

New I-90 highway signs will include “Old Exit” signs for a minimum of two years to help the public get acquainted with the new system, MassDOT said.

The project is estimated to cost $2.8 million and will be paid for through Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds. HSIP funding carries a 90/10 split, which means that 90% of the project will be funded through federal funds and the remaining 10% will be funded through state highway funds.

Renumbering highways across the state began in the fall of 2020 and is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2021.
