CMU finishes 3-3 after 24-23 loss at Toledo
TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo got a 28-yard touchdown pass with 1:33 remaining on Saturday in handing Central Michigan a 24-23 Mid-American Conference football loss in the Chippewas' season finale at the Glass Bowl.
CMU finished 3-3 both overall and in the MAC in the COVID-19-abbreviated season. Toledo is 4-2.
After trailing 17-10 at halftime, the Chippewas dominated play for much of the second half, getting a 68-yard touchdown run from Lew Nichols III and two Marshall Meeder field goals to seize a 23-17 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
CMU's defense stymied the Rockets throughout the second half, but Toledo put together an 11-play, 83-yard drive that culminated in a 28-yard pass TD from Carter Bradley to Jerjuan Newton on third-and-22.
"A lot of plays in that game that lost it," second-year CMU coach Jim McElwain said. "I was pretty honest with them in the locker room afterwards. It's unacceptable to have three losses in this league. And those who choose to come back, it's going to be a pretty good offseason for them."
Nichols, a redshirt freshman, finished with 101 yards rushing and the Chippewa defense forced four turnovers and recorded five sacks. But in the end, CMU could not make enough plays to pull out the victory and its offense failed to sustain a game-clinching drive in the fourth quarter when the Chippewas clung to a six-point lead.
"Didn't make plays when we needed to obviously," McElwain said. "We had a chance there to make a couple first downs and ice the game and we didn't."
Four Toledo turnovers – three interceptions and one fumble – kept the Chippewas in the game when they couldn't move the ball, particularly in the first half. But CMU was able only to net three points from the turnovers.
"The defense pressured the quarterback for the most part like we knew we had to do to give us a chance to win," McElwain said. "You would think that normally you get that many turnovers you'd produce some points out of them. That, looking back, was probably the thing that nailed it for us."
The Chippewas finished with 165 yards through the air, 101 of that total on 9-of-19 passing by quarterback Ty Brock. Wide receiver Kalil Pimpleton frequently took snaps and completed 3-of-5 passes for 64 yards. He connected with Kobe Lewis for an 18-yard TD on the Chippewas' first drive of the game.
He also connected with Brock for a 34-yard gain.
"No matter what happens, win or lose, we are a family," Pimpleton said. "Of course the game didn't go as we wanted it to, as we planned, but there's always tomorrow to look forward to. Got to come back and regroup and get ready for the next season, get ready for the MAC championship."
CMU's other TD came on its first offensive play of the second half when Nichols motored 68 yards to the end zone, helped along the way by an outstanding block from wide receiver Drayton Law. That tied the game at 17-17.
Meeder kicked field goals of 23, 53 and 47 yards. The 53-yarder was a career long for the freshman and it put CMU up, 20-17, with 5:49 to play in the third quarter. His 47-yarder came with 3:02 left in the third and extended the Chippewa lead to 23-17.
