STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated Penn State, 3-1, on Wednesday night (Dec. 2), benefiting from the strong play of Strauss Mann, who made 38 saves.
Michigan (5-2-0, 3-2-0-1 Big Ten) dominated puck possession early in the first period, pushing the play and challenging Penn State goaltender Oskar Autio while keeping things quiet on Mann's side of the ice. That early pressure paid off when Nolan Moyle opened the scoring 4:10 into the contest. After PSU turned the puck over in their own end, Moyle made them pay, finishing a nice passing play by burying his shot five-hole to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Garrett Van Wyhe and Jacob Truscott collected assists on the goal.
With the secondary helper on Moyle's tally, Truscott is riding a three-game point streak. After 20 minutes, U-M led Penn State (0-5-0, 0-5-0-0 Big Ten) in shots, 9-8, while carrying it's one-goal lead into the dressing room.
Pressing to expand the Michigan lead in the second period, Michael Pastujov scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season 1:38 into the man-advantage and at the 7:21 mark of the middle period. The Wolverines were cycling the puck around the Nittany Lions zone when Pastujov knocked a loose puck from the corner up the boards to Thomas Bordeleau at the left half wall. Bordeleau dished the puck across the ice to Brendan Brisson inside the right circle while Pastujov skated from the corner toward the net. Seeing his teammate's route into an open pocket near the crease, Brisson zipped an immediate seam pass back across the ice in his direction. The senior maneuvered past the sprawling PSU goaltender before depositing the puck into an open cage to double the Michigan lead to 2-0.
The Wolverines continued to dictate the pace of play throughout the first half of the final frame, but were unable to tack on another goal before a Penn State forward found the back of the net with a backdoor goal in transition to cut the PSU deficit to 2-1 with 9:00 left. The Nittany Lions desperately battled until the final buzzer in search of a tying goal, forcing Mann and the Michigan defense to bear down deep in their own end while defending against six PSU skaters.
With the Nittany Lions netminder pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Matty Beniers collected the puck and buried an empty-net goal from the neutral zone to make the score 3-1 and ice the game with 1:42 remaining in regulation. Moyle picked up the lone assist on Beniers' empty-netter to secure his first multi-point game since Jan. 18, when he collected two points in Michigan's last appearance at Pegula Ice Arena, a 4-4 tie.
Mann recorded 38 saves in the midweek win, a season-high for the defending Big Ten Goaltender of the Year. On Thursday night (Dec. 3), the Wolverines and Nittany Lions will once again face off in State College. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
