BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - UPDATE: ALEA troopers said the northbound lane on Interstate 59 from Exit 76 to Exit 86 reopened shortly after 1 A.M. Monday, September 13, 2021.

ORIGINAL: The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reports the northbound lane on Interstate 59 from Exit 76 to Exit 86 has been closed.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and ALEA are currently diverting traffic at Exit 76 on U.S. 11 then back onto I-59 at Exit 89.

According to a state trooper in Tuscaloosa County, “ALDOT closed the roadway due to a Hazmat spill that occurred sometime Friday near the 81 mm. They scheduled to clean it up today. I’m told that the vehicle was off the roadway and they were shutting the roadway down so that the cleanup would be handled properly.”

ALEA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates accordingly.
