LOWELL, Mass. – Despite turning in an incredible defensive performance through more than 60 minutes of play, the UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-2, 1-1 AE) came up just short in a 1-0 overtime setback against California on Sunday.

In what was an unbelieve America East battle for both sides, the Golden Bears ended the game in the 67th minute when Anne van Hoof dribbled into the circle and towards the left wing before launching a reverse-stick chip just inside the far post.

"Besides the result, I thought the performance in the first 60 minutes was great," said Head Coach Shannon LeBlanc. "We possessed the ball, we outleted, we created opportunities. Cal is a great team, so I felt the match itself in the first 60 was fantastic. The overtime was a completely different story."

Cal took a 19-9 edge in shots in the contest, but sophomore goalkeeper Eleonore Boekhorst (Bilthoven, Netherlands) logged a season-high eight saves, while senior keeper Rose Cuozzo (Wilmington, Mass.) entered the game in the final minutes of regulation and made a pivotal stop to send it to overtime.

The Bears put the outing's first shot on target, testing Boekhorst with a backhanded attempt in the eighth minute, which she handled cleanly. The visitors followed with three more attempts on goal in the period, but the River Hawk back line kept the game scoreless with the help of a defensive save by senior Lara Ansaldi (Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina).

Cal continued to keep the ball in their offensive end in the second quarter, as Boekhorst sustained the pressure and batted away another laser in the 23rd minute.

The River Hawks turned the momentum in their favor late in the period with back-to-back corners. Sophomore Mirthe Gans (Tiel, Netherlands) and junior Kate Miller (Cherry Hill, N.J.) fired on cage in the waning minutes of the half, but Cal's Cato Knipping sent the teams into the half deadlocked at 0-0.

After the break, the teams combined for just six shots, as neither side was able to maintain possession. Maddie Cleat got out in front of the pack in the 37th minute for an open look that was knocked out of the air by Boekhorst.

In the fourth quarter, freshman Valerie Crory (Littleton, Mass.) sent a chance into the legs of Knipping on a corner. Cuozzo was then called onto the field following a card on Boekhorst, and with the help of the defensive corner unit, fended off a final attack to force overtime.

Cuozzo and Boekhorst split time in the cage in overtime, turning away seven Cal chances before the game-winner.

The River Hawks are back at home on Friday night, October 1, when they host New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
