For eight innings, the road Rockies portended misery. The wretched afternoon — headlined by an injury to starter Kyle Freeland — appeared destined to end in another road loss.
But three outs from a road sweep, the Rockies rallied Wednesday afternoon, with help from the Rangers. After consecutive one-out walks, shortstop Brendan Rodgers ripped a first-pitch double to left-center field, scoring two and making it 6-5 Rockies.
Four errors later (yes, four errors), including three by Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, and the Rockies had tacked on three more runs.
Colorado’s wild 9-5 victory in Arlington staved off a sweep and momentarily distracted from Freeland, who exited with a left hip impingement.
Rodgers finished with two runs, two hits and three RBIs.
“We needed to win that game after the last two nights,” Rodgers said. “We were in it the whole game, we were chipping away. … That last inning we got a few guys on base with some really good at-bats, two big walks for me to put a good swing on it.”
Reliever Jhoulys Chacin picked up the win.
The five-run ninth ended Colorado’s nine-game road trip on a slight high, though the status of Freeland was far more pressing.
Freeland, who started the game, lasted only an inning before exiting with hip tightness. After getting through the first, Freeland offered up a leadoff walk – his second of the game – before Rockies manager Bud Black approached him on the mound. Without much debate and without any indication of what was ailing him, Freeland was done after 21 pitches.
“He noticed warming up that he really couldn’t push off the rubber and drive down the mound,” Black said. “He thought it might progressively get better as he got into his warmups and when he got into the game with some game adrenaline, but it never happened.”
Black, who noted Freeland had never had a similar injury, said he was removed for “precautionary reasons.”
Colorado’s relief pitchers provided no help in the second inning as Texas took a 5-0 lead.
Ironically, it was their relief pitching that kept the Rockies within striking distance, however.
The Rockies used six relievers to keep the Rangers scoreless after the second inning, however. Robert Stephenson gave Colorado two quality innings, and Daniel Bard worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. Chacin worked clean seventh and eighth innings. And Carlos Estevez closed the ninth.
Sam Hilliard walked to start the fifth, and Connor Joe sent him into scoring position on a one-out double to left. Hilliard scurried home and Joe moved to third on a passed ball, as the Rockies gained momentum. After another walk, Charlie Blackmon beat out a potential double-play while Joe raced home, cutting the margin to 5-4.

Trending: C.J. Cron didn’t want August to end. Cron mashed 11 home runs and 34 RBIs in August while hitting .387 with a slugging percentage of .828. Cron led the National League in all four categories. He’s also reached base safely in 25 consecutive games, which ties the longest of his career. His 34 RBIs are the most in any month by any player in the majors this season.
At issue: Having dropped the first two games of the series against the Rangers, the Rockies had already lost this road series entering Wednesday’s game. Their recent 2-1 series win over the Dodgers, which also came on this current road trip, was just their second road series win of the season.
