Penguins Defeat Incarnate Word, 44-41, in Overtime Thriller - Youngstown State Athletics

Senior Colt McFadden made a 41-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime, and hit the 27-yard game-winner in the extra period to lift the Youngstown State football team to a 44-41 victory over the University of Incarnate Word on Saturday evening at Stambaugh Stadium.

The Penguins improve to 1-0 while the Cardinals fall to 0-1.

Trailing 41-38 with 16 seconds remaining and the ball at their own 32-yard line, the Penguins' Demeatric Crenshaw found Jaleel McLaughlin on a 45-yard gain to the UIW 23 with just two seconds left to set up McFadden's game-tying field goal.

In the overtime, YSU's Vinny Gentile's third-down sack of UIW's Cameron Ward pushed the Cardinals back to their own 40. On the next play, Ward fumbled at the YSU 17 and the Penguins recovered.

On the Penguins' possession, Crenshaw and McLaughlin each ran twice to the UIW 10 setting up McFadden's game-winning kick.

McLaughlin ran for 242 yards on 29 carries with two touchdowns, including a 72-yard scamper, while Crenshaw threw for 112 yards on 9-of-12 passing with a touchdown. McLaughlin's 242 yards are the seventh-most in a single-game in program history and the most since Marcus Mason ran for 249 yards against Southern Illinois on Nov. 4, 2006.

The Penguins took a 38-34 lead on a nine-yard touchdown by Crenshaw with 2:15 left in the game. The Penguins took over after the Cardinals failed to convert a 4-and-1 at their own 31.

The Cardinals took the lead, 34-31, by forcing a YSU three-and-out and the Penguins' short punt landed out of bounds at their own 34-yard line. UIW converted a 4th-and-10 to get to the YSU 20, and scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Ward to Darion Chafin to take a 34-31 with 54 seconds left in the third.

After the Cardinals drove the entire length of the field and missed a 24-yard field on the opening possession, the Penguins answered with an eight-play, 80-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead.

McLaughlin ran four times for 43 yards and Crenshaw hit Bryce Oliver on a five-yard touchdown pass to cap the drive.

Brandon Serrano blocked a Cardinals punt on the ensuing possession, and Crenshaw barreled in from three yards out to give the Penguins a 14-0 lead with 4:34 left in the first quarter.

The Cardinal cut the lead in half with on a 29-yard touchdown run by Kevin Brown with 56 seconds left in the quarter.

The Penguins extended their lead to 17-7 after a 27-yard field goal by Colt McFadden at the 10:21 mark of the second quarter.

The Cardinals scored 14 straight points to take a 21-17 lead after a pair of touchdown passes from Cameron Ward to Darian Chafin for 38 yards and a nine-yarder to Taylor Grimes.

McLaughlin's 72-yard touchdown run with 2:20 left in second gave the Penguins a 24-21 advantage.

The Penguins extended the lead to 31-21 after taking the opening possession of the second half 82 yards in 15 play capped by an 11-yard touchdown run by McLaughlin, his second score of the game.

On the drive, Crenshaw converted a 3rd-and-5 with a 16-yard run to the UIW 26, and hit Oliver on 4th-and-5 for 10 yards to the Cardinals' 11.

UIW answered with a 10-play, 74-yard drive and got within four, 31-27, on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Kevin Brown, but the Cardinals missed the extra point.

Youngstown State visits Michigan State, Saturday, Sept. 11. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich.
