As state transportation officials plan to close an exit ramp from Interstate 696 to Gratiot Avenue this week, a spokesperson says construction on that and another road project will continue until late 2021.
Michigan Department of Transportation officials say the westbound exit ramp from I-696 to Gratiot will be closed for the next week as they work to rebuild major driveways north of the Gratiot and 11 Mile Road intersection.
The rebuilding of Gratiot between 11 Mile and 14 Mile roads in Roseville and a similar effort for 4.5 miles of Hall Road (M-59) will proceed until as long as weather conditions allow.
“Both projects are two-year projects and will complete the first phase by late fall before wrapping up for the year,” MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross said in an email seeking information on how long longer this year state crews can work.
“It’s a bit too soon to know how late they will go into the fall just yet. Depending on weather, they could go into November/December before wrapping up the construction season and return in the spring of 2022.”
An MDOT traffic advisory notes the exit ramp off I-696 to Gratiot will close at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7. It is scheduled to reopen at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
Motorists will be detoured further west to the next exit, M-97 (Groesbeck Highway) Exit 26, then will continue northbound on to eastbound 12 Mile Road to get back to Gratiot Avenue.
MDOT launched the two-year, $65 million rebuild project in March. The effort includes replacement of the asphalt roadway, water main and storm sewer work, sign replacements, and signal modernization, along with ramp and sidewalks that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The first phase will see work done on Gratiot from 11 Mile to Common roads, and then in 2022, from Common to 14 Mile Road.
The work is about 25% complete, according to MDOT’s construction meter.
Meanwhile, MDOT says it is also moving forward with a $63 million, two-year rebuild of 4.5 miles of Hall Road (M-59) between Interstate 94 and Romeo Plank Road in Clinton, Chesterfield, Harrison and Macomb townships.
The work is progressing from Interstate 94 to Romeo Plank Road in Clinton, Chesterfield, Harrison and Macomb townships. It includes replacement of the asphalt roadway, water main and storm sewer work, sign replacement, signal modernization, and work to fill in sidewalk gaps.
The project is also 25% complete, according to MDOT’s construction meter.
According to MDOT, westbound M-59 lanes at Twin Rivers Drive is scheduled to reopen this week. Until then, access to Twin Rivers will be maintained through Riverwoods Drive.
