Kyle Busch has been fined $50,000 for an unsafe entry into the garage area at Darlington Raceway after crashing in NASCAR’s playoff opener on Sunday night.
Busch had a collision with Austin Dillon on Lap 125 of the Southern 500, which caused Busch to wreck and then immediately take his damaged No. 18 to the garage.
He made a sharp left turn from pit road — running over some orange cones that had been placed there to force drivers to go wide — and carried some speed through an area where spectators might be crossing. It appeared some people scrambled to get out of Busch’s way.
NASCAR said Busch violated rules about safety and conduct.
One of those rules, Rule 12.5.2.5.a, reads in part: “Safety is a top priority for NASCAR. Therefore, any violations deemed to compromise the safety of an event or otherwise pose a dangerous risk to the safety of competitors, officials, spectators or others are treated with the highest degree of seriousness.”
Rule 12.8, another cited as cause for the fine, regards “correct and proper conduct, both on and off the racetrack.” It continues to say running afoul of the conduct rule “might constitute a behavioral rules violation.”
That was the case this time for Busch, though he was not penalized any points and his playoff standing will not be affected. He is currently two points below the cutoff line heading to Richmond Raceway and Bristol Motor Speedway, his two best tracks.
In July, Busch escaped penalty after angrily bumping the pace car at New Hampshire Motor Speedway after NASCAR officials let the race go green despite a wet track — which caused Busch to crash while leading the race.
