OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – A semi-truck trailer caught fire Sunday, forcing the closure of a ramp on westbound I-96.
The incident began just before 7 p.m. Aug. 8 when the driver traveling west on I-96 experienced a “mechanical issue,” with the trailer, according to a news release from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver pulled off the freeway at the Coopersville exit at 68th Avenue and realized the trailer was on fire, according to the news release. The driver was able to disconnect the trailer, which was loaded with Styrofoam products and became engulfed with fire, according to the release.
The exit off ramp was closed for an extended period for cleanup.
The Coopersville/Polkton and Wright/Tallmadge fire departments also responded to the incident.
