Bill Maher Doubles Down On Criticizing Joe Biden's "Ass-Backwards" Afghanistan Exit On HBO's 'Real Time' - Decider

Last night on HBO‘s Real Time with Bill Maher, the host doubled down on criticism of President Joe Biden‘s “ass-backwards” Afghanistan exit where America has had to help airlift over 100,000 civilians out of the country. Tens of thousands more are expected to flee the South Asian country prior to the last troops leaving.

“I’ll tell you, America not so good at wining wars, but the getting the f**k out part, we’re getting a lot of practice at that,” he said to his studio audience.

“Of course there was this suicide bombing which makes it a giant tragedy now,” said Maher of the whole ordeal. “Am I the only one who thinks we did this completely ass-backwards? We pulled the troops out, and then tried to evacuate the civilians? I feel that was a little backwards.”

Maher’s monologue comes one week after he ridiculed America’s exit strategy (or lack thereof) and just one day after 13 U.S. service members and 169 Afghan refugees were killed while attempting to flee the country which is now under the theocratic rule of the Taliban. ISIS-K, a group that Maher referred to as “not a boy band” and “the Delta variant of ISIS,” claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing that injured hundreds that were gathered in front of security checkpoints leading to an American plane.

Maher was not too happy with the current conditions in Kabul.

“All the roads to the airport are gridlocked of course, the airport is complete mayhem, there is no sanitation, no power,” he said. “Today the promoters of the FYRE Festival said, that is so poor planning,” joked Maher in reference to the failed 2019 music festival that left attendees stranded on an island in the Bahamas with no food, accommodations and even performers.

The comedian mentioned Joe Biden’s message to the attackers behind Thursday’s bombing that “we will hunt you down and make you pay.”

“So America is no longer the world’s policeman, we’re the world’s student loan officer,” he said sarcastically.

Biden had warned the country on August 26 of a potential terrorist attack and stated that America would not “be intimidated.”

The Pentagon announced on Thursday that it had completed a successful drone strike on a supposed “ISIS-K planner.” Central Command spokesman Capt. Bill Urban said “initial indications are that we killed the target,” adding that “we know of no civilian casualties.” Dozens of packed flights continued to leave Kabul while thousands more anxiously waited outside the gates of the airport hoping to be on one of the planes.

Despite the single worst loss of American life in over 10 years of this “forever war” as it has been dubbed, President Biden has stayed firm on his pledge that all U.S. forces will leave Afghanistan by August 31. As Maher pointed out, so far, over 100,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan by the American military in one of the most ambitious humanitarian airlifts ever.

Following through (to some extent) on former President Donald Trump‘s desire to leave Afghanistan just under two weeks before the 20th anniversary of 9/11, a date which will live in infamy after al-Qaeda orchestrated a multi-plane attack on New York City and Washington D.C. while passengers of another flight thwarted an additional attack by detaining hijackers on board as the plane crashed outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The horrific day resulted in 2,977 deaths.

Those tragedies gave President George W. Bush license to launch the initial assault on Afghanistan in the fall of 2001 which overthrew the repressive Taliban and began a nearly decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda’s 9/11 chief planner Osama Bin Laden.

Real Time with Bill Maher is skipping next week but will be back on September 10.
