A look at Bobcat football today and through the years...

August 10, 2021: A day-by-day look at Bobcat football, today and throughout history… two years ago today, Isaiah Ifanse had a memorable afternoon in a scrimmage.

DAILY NOTEBOOK
THE EARLY BOUNCE: While praising this year's freshman class as a whole, MSU coach Brent Vigen said a handful of rookies have caught his eye. "Guys that have grown on me in particular are guys that have been around for a while, through the summer," Vigen said. "(Tight end) Elijah Reynolds from Red Lodge has been very impressive all summer and a couple days in (to camp). That doesn't mean he'll have to play, but I've really been pleased with what he brings to the table. (Wide receiver) Andrew Patterson and (cornerback) Simeon Woodard weren't necessarily here as long but are both skill guys that have that do show a whole bunch of skill. I'd start with those three, but it's a good group. We didn't recruit most of these guys as a complete staff, but I'm really impressed with the talent, the desire, all those things."

LINE PLUNGES: With Cole Sain's emergence at center, most of Montana State's offensive line appears to be settling. Bobcat coach Brent Vigen is pleased with what he's seen. "The other four starters (outside of those competing for a guard job) – Taylor (Tuiasosopo), Lewis (Kidd), Cole (Sain), and Zach Redd – those guys look different than they did in the spring," he said. "They didn't rest on their laurels. Sometimes when you don't have that guy behind you pushing you that's evident, it's human nature to slow down a little bit, but it doesn't look like those guys did that this summer." Vigen said that tackle TJ Session – "He's continued to change his body, change his demeanor," Vigen said – has impressed, along with guards Joe McElroy, Dylan Porter, and Justus Perkins. "Those are all guys on the interior, so something's going to have to give there," Vigen said. Position flexibility – each of the likely starters can play more than one spot – allows Vigen and offensive line coach Brian Armstrong to select the best five players rather than forcing settling for someone that didn't earn their place in the starting lineup.

HAPPY AND HEALTHY: Bobcat coach Brent Vigen said, at least partially attributable to the team's physical condition, that he's pleased with his team's health through four practices. "I think we came in healthy," Vigen said, indicating that the team has managed a few holdover injuries from the spring and some incurred this fall that will cost players a short amount of tim on the shelf. "The nature of football is that we're going to have some things go the wrong way injury-wise and that's why building our depth is so important, but right now I think we're healthy and that's a credit to the medical staff and strength staff."

August 10 in Bobcat Football History: 2019 – Sophomore running back Isaiah Ifanse, nine months after becoming the first Bobcat in history to rush for over 1,000 yards as a freshman, scored three touchdowns in MSU's first scrimmage of preseason camp. Greg Filer III, Jahque Alleyne and Ty Okada each picked off passes for the defense. 2017 – Jeff Choate announced the move of Wilson Brott to tight end from tackle. Brott became a useful utility player as an in-line blocker and receiver for the Cats over the next couple of seasons. 2013 – Tanner Roderick caught four passes for 122 yards and a touchdown in MSU's first scrimmage of fall camp today in 2013. Jake Bleskin completed five of his seven passes for 131 yards, while Dakota Prukop was 7-for-8 for 105 yards.

2021 POSITION PREVIEW
Running BacksIsaiah Ifanse returns as one of the most productive running backs in the FCS, with 1,838 career rushing yards to his credit and an arsenal of skills that blends a bruising between-the-tackles style with breakaway speed. Ifanse missed parts of six 2019 games, but when available he drives a powerful and versatile ground game. The junior is joined by veteran Lane Sumner, who gained 424 rushing yards in 2019, and an array of talented young runners. Elijah Elliott showed breakaway speed in the fall and spring, along with ability in the pass game. Versatile DeMareus Hosey and power back Jaharie Martin bring game experience and wide-ranging skills to the Bobcat offense, while Minaya Olivo, Garrett Coon and speedy Jaalen Rening are talented young backs seeking roles. Sorting out assignments for MSU's stable of talented backs stands as one of preseason camp's most important functions.
