RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond student-athletes competed hard in competition this spring and were even more impressive in the classroom. The Spider student-athletes consistently exceeded the high standards for their academic achievement, posting a 3.50 departmental grade point average in the spring 2021 term.
“Our student-athletes continue to impress and excel in the classroom,” Vice President and Director of Athletics John P. Hardt said. “It is a testament to their dedication and commitment to excellence not only in competition, but in the classroom. We are incredibly thankful for the support our Richmond faculty and academic support services provide our student-athletes on a daily basis. One of our guiding principles in Spider Athletics is providing a high quality academic experience that provides a solid foundation for our student-athletes’ success after graduation.”
The Spiders had 350 student-athletes (87% of student-athlete population) produce a 3.0 GPA or higher in the spring semester. Richmond student-athletes now boast an average 3.33 cumulative GPA for its 403 student-athletes after the unique academic year that offered challenges of its own during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Every one of the Spiders’ 17 athletic programs turned in a term GPA of 3.12 or higher in the spring. The Spider men’s golf program led the way with a term GPA of 3.90. Senior Michael Baker (Concord, N.C.) led the way as one of the two Spiders to earn Presidential Citation honors as the top academic senior along with Rachel Ziemba (Cazenovia, N.Y.) of women’s lacrosse.
The women’s tennis program was second among all teams with a 3.72 term GPA in the spring. Both the soccer and swimming and diving programs rounded out the top four programs this spring, both producing 3.70 GPAs for the term.
