Ahmed Jaziri to Race in NCAA Steeplechase Semifinals Tonight on ESPNU
EUGENE, Ore. – Eastern Kentucky University junior Ahmed Jaziri will race in the semifinals of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday evening at Hayward Field.
Jaziri is in the second of two heats, which will likely go off around 8:40 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
The top five finishers from both heats, plus the next two fastest times, will advance to Friday's finals.
The finals will be contested on Friday at 8:24 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
The top eight finishers in every event at Hayward Field receive first team All-America honors. The second eight finishers receive second team All-America honors. The final eight finishers are named honorable mention All-America.
Jaziri qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing second in his heat at the NCAA East Prelims on May 28 in Jacksonville, Florida. He broke the EKU record in the steeplechase with his time of 8:32.9 at the Trials of Miles Qualifier in Kansas City on May 5. That time was fourth fastest in the country this season.
EKU has sent a man to the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase eight of the last nine years.
Jaziri – a native of Rades, Tunisia – is one of only three Ohio Valley Conference student-athletes at the NCAA Championships, joining Eastern Illinois' Adam Swanson (men's 800 meters) and Tennessee State's R'Lazon Brumfield (men's triple jump).
