FRESNO, Calif. - Boise State women's soccer dropped the second match of the weekend in a 1-0 loss to Fresno State, Sunday afternoon.
"I'm super proud of how we went about our business this weekend, two really, really tough results against two tough teams but all teams are tough in the Mountain West [Conference], so there's nothing new there," said head coach Jim Thomas.
Defense dominated the match early with neither team able to find the back of the net in the first half. Boise State (4-3-1, 4-3-1 MW) held Fresno State (5-3-1, 5-3-1 MW) to just one shot on goal in the first half despite the Bulldogs having eight corner kicks.
Boise State had its best opportunity to score in the first half off a corner kick. Macie Nelson headed a shot into the top-right corner but the Bulldog keeper made a leaping save to stop it.
"The kind of contributions we're getting from people like KP [Kennedi Paul] or Kiara [Simpson] coming into the starting lineup, the minutes that Mia Guerrero played just shows you how well invested every member of our squad is," said Thomas. "I guarantee a bunch of players at home were yelling and screaming like they were here on the sidelines with us."
Junior goalkeeper Sydney Smith started her fourth game of the year in the net for the Broncos with one save in the first half. Freshman Genevieve Crenshaw took over at halftime and also made a save before surrendering the eventual game winner in the 66th minute. Crenshaw was be credited with the loss as she drops to 2-1-0 on the season.
"Obviously, the results are unfortunate and they're not the way that we want the games to go," said Thomas. "But at the same time, we've got a lot of players that are learning a lot about playing at this level, and they're doing it while staying together and giving everything that they can for their city and institution."
The Bulldogs finished with 12 corner kicks. However, the Bronco defense limited Fresno State to just seven shots and three on goal in the game.
The Broncos took five shots in the match with just two on goal and a lone corner kick.
"We have a big weekend ahead of us, so we will get back to that, and preparing to continue to try and go undefeated at home, and end with a positive feel to the way that the season has gone," said Thomas.
Boise State returns to Boas Soccer Complex for the final homestand of the season. The Broncos host San Diego State, Friday April 9. Sunday, April 11, will be senior day for Boise State as it hosts UNLV.
