Losing to a winless Oklahoma team would have been a tough pill to swallow for the Baylor soccer team Friday night, particularly going into a four-month break before the start of a spring schedule.
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt and freshman forward Olivia Mack made sure the Bears didn't have the same feeling they had in last Friday's 1-0 loss at Texas.
Wandt stopped a one-on-one attempt by Lauren Tovy with a "big-time" kick save, then Mack scored her first career goal on a rebound off an Ally Henderson corner kick and header by Guiliana Cunningham in the seventh minute of the first overtime as Baylor (3-3-3)  closed the fall season with a 1-0 win over the Sooners (0-6-1) Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
"Before our first overtime, Ally looked at us and was like, 'We've had so many corner kicks, we have to put one away,''' Mack said. "Every time we had a corner, I kept getting called because I was on the goalie too much, so on this one I'm just going to stand off and see what I can create from that. . . . I saw it at the girls' feet, and I was like, 'This is my time,' and just dove and was like, 'Anything I can do to get it right now will be good. And it went in."
When Mack got it past OU goalkeeper Nikki Panas into the lower left corner of the net, the golden goal set off a celebration that ended up with Mack at the bottom of a dogpile near the Oklahoma goal.
"We had been putting some good pressure on, we were getting some opportunities," Baylor coach Paul Jobson said. "That kid is just a scrapper and a fighter and just found a way to make it happen for herself and for her team."
Much like the Texas game, the Bears dominated the shots, 16-9, and had plenty of scoring opportunities. But, for the fifth time in nine games, they weren't able to score a goal in regulation.
"Us not really having the offensive success, I think, gave them some momentum," Jobson said. "I wasn't real happy with our first half, because we didn't play our game plan the way we set things up during the week. That was frustrating. But, we made some adjustments at halftime and came out in the second half much better, to the point where it gave us an opportunity to win the game."
Baylor did have a couple chances in the first half, but Panas stopped Moon in a one-on-one situation about 20 minutes into the game and then Mackenzie Anthony had a shot from 15 yards out richochet off the crossbar.
Recording her 31st career shutout, which leaves her one shy of Texas A&M's Melanie Wilson for fourth in Big 12 history, Wandt came up with four saves and had at least one other one-on-one stop.
"We hope our goalkeepers don't have to do a lot," Jobson said, "but when Jen has to do something, it's usually a pretty big save. She proved that again tonight and just saved us big-time. That was a game-saving save."
Mack's goal was the fourth scored this season by a Baylor freshman this year. The Bears have had four freshmen start every game, with a league-high nine of the team's 14 freshmen seeing game action this year.
"They've just became part of the heart and soul of what we're doing," Jobson said. "they've really intertwined with our veterans. I've been saying this all year long, the veterans have done a great job of bringing the youngsters along. We wouldn't be where we are right now (without them). We wouldn't be where we are right now . . . and a lot of that is because of your young kids really getting on board fast and learning quickly."
The Bears, who are 3-0-2 at home this season, haven't allowed a goal at Betty Lou Mays Field since a 2-1 loss to Texas on Oct. 18, 2019.
"Obviously, we love to win at home and get shutouts at home," Wandt said. "it's just awesome with the home crowd. They make it super easy. . . . We love to get shutouts, but anytime we get a shutout, it makes it easier to win. I'm really grateful that we could do that and put it away and keep goals out of the back of the net for this entire year."
Baylor will tentatively have a spring schedule beginning March 1, trying to land a spot in a scaled-down 48-team field for the NCAA tournament, but Jobson said no dates or opponents have been set.

THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Olivia Mack delivered the golden goal as Baylor defeated Oklahoma, 1-0, in overtime of Friday's fall finale under the lights at Betty Lou Mays Field.

It marked Mack's first career goal as she cleaned up on the Bears' seventh corner kick of the night. Ally Henderson sent it in from the left side at the 97-minute mark. After Giuliana Cunningham headed the ball, Mack took a shot, but it was knocked away by the Oklahoma keeper. Mack quickly rebounded and poked the ball into the lower left corner of the net to secure the Baylor victory.

Mere minutes before, Oklahoma had its chance to record its first win of 2020 when Lauren Tovy received a through ball and had a one-on-one chance against BU keeper Jennifer Wandt who was coming off her line. Tovy booted a shot from about 12 yards out, but Wandt was there with the kick save to dash the Sooners' hopes of victory.

Wandt wasn't called on much, as she finished the night with four saves, but when she was needed, she delivered. The senior now has 31 career shutouts to her name, six of which have come this season.

Baylor, despite finishing with only three shots on frame, had several other chances that missed by mere inches. Freshman forward Mackenzie Anthony sent in a shot from about 15 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 36th minute. A few more times in the second half, Baylor sent in a screamer that soared just above the crossbar.

The Bears finish the fall portion of their season with a 3-3-3 record. Details for the spring portion are TBD.

TOP QUOTES
Paul Jobson on the win…
"When you have a bad result, it kind of lingers until your next match. And in the season, it may be a couple days or a week at the most. But, we're looking at going on a four-month hiatus here before we can play another match. And that's not a taste we wanted in our mouth for that long. That was the challenge at halftime, can we step up a bit and walk out of here with our heads held high and not have the same feeling we had after the Texas match."

Jobson on Wandt's saves…
"We've said for a long time that we hope our goalkeepers don't have to do a lot, but when Jen has to do something, it's usually a pretty big save. And she proved that again tonight and just saved us big-time, that was a game-saving save."

Olivia Mack on her goal…
"I saw the ball come in and I was like, 'Okay the goalie didn't get it into her hands,' and then I saw it at the girls' feet and I was like, 'This is my time,' and just dove and (thought) anything I can do to get it right now will be good, and it went in."
