After months of enjoying your at-home cocktails, bars have finally reopened in Florida. Although every bar may feel new right now, one downtown St. Pete bar is truly opening for the first time.
The opening bell has finally rung at Whiskey Exchange, a stock market themed bar, located at 540 Central Avenue, formerly home to The Classy Closet.
Yes, you read that correctly. A stock market-themed bar. Similar to how stocks in the S&P 500 and NASDAQ go up and down in value throughout the day, drink prices at Whiskey Exchange fluctuate based on supply and demand. For instance, if a certain drink is flying off the shelves, the price will go up. On the other hand, if very few patrons are buying it, the price will drop.
The prices change every ten people and visitors can view the “stock” ticker to see what drinks have gone down in price. The bar has even implementing “market crashes,” which will be announced on social media. Two types of crashes are possible, one is a regularly recurring crash (similar to a happy hour), while the other type of crash is completely at random and lasts for about 30 to 45 minutes. In both cases, the prices of drinks decrease.
“The random crashes get you to play with drinks that you don’t normally see or touch,” says owner Greg Mikurak, who also owns Thirsty First on Central Ave.
The menu is filled with more than just Maker’s Mark and Jack Daniels too. Ask to see the Whiskey Bible, a tome filled with 250 whiskeys available to order at Whiskey Exchange. There are also eight beer taps, wine, one cocktail on tap and 12 craft cocktails on the menu.
As for food, cheese and charcuterie along with other light bites are offered. In the future, the owners hope to serve brunch on the weekends.
Whiskey Exchange has several owners from well-known spots. Owners of Thirsty First, Greg Mikurak and his wife Romina, Mike Jennings and the partners of One Night Stand and owners of Woody’s River Roo and Lost Kangaroo Pub, Jen and Rob Woodring, all came together to make Whiskey Exchange a reality.
