DENHAM, England — University of Colorado sophomore Ellie Gower tied for eighth in the third event of the European Rose Ladies Series, a one-day event that featured some of the top women on the European LPGA Tour held Thursday here at Buckinghamshire Golf Club.
Gower recorded an even-par 72 on the 6,303-yard course design, but stood 3-over par after three holes when she opened bogey-par-double bogey. From that point on, she put in a stellar performance, scoring three birdies and 12 pars the remainder of her round.
Gower, who won't turn 18 until this August, was also the second low amateur in the field, one stroke behind Lily May Humphreys. There were 54 players in the field, including three amateurs, with Gemma Dryburgh claiming medalist honors with a 3-under 69.
"Ellie has been hard at work on her golf game at home in Scotland and has not had the opportunity to compete since our last college tournament in March," CU head coach Anne Kelly said. "She was very excited to get the invite into one of the new European events today and play with some of the top lady professional golfers in the world.
"I'm very proud of the work she has put in and she played a very solid round and had a respectable finish against a great field of players," Kelly added. It is only a one-day event, but the experience she gained will be beneficial for her future."
"PGA Tour member Justin Rose and his wife are trying to help the European ladies tour stay afloat by sponsoring some new tournaments," Kelly noted. "Ellie got a special invitation and was paired with LPGA player, Georgia Hall."
Hall won the 2018 British Open and U.S. Open and tied for second Thursday with a 2-under 70. The field also included LPGA Hall of Fame member Laura Davies (who shot a 77 Thursday), Brontë Law (former UCLA superstar) and Charlie Hall (young UK star and Solheim Cup team member).
Gower, who hails from Perth, Scotland, joined the Buffaloes prior to the start of the 2020 spring semester and proved to be a solid addition to the team. She made an immediate impact in her first event, the San Diego Lamkin Invitational Match Play, where she recorded a 3-0 record and led CU to a fifth-place team finish. She played in two tournaments before the pandemic cancelled play for the rest of the spring; and six of her rounds counted toward the CU's team score as she averaged 75.0 strokes per round.
