COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An unexpected early exit to the postseason has led Ohio State’s staff to a huge opportunity in building the next few recruiting classes.

On Monday, the Buckeyes offered 2023 defensive lineman A’mauri Washington of Chandler High School (Ariz.). Washington is ranked as a four-star and has 14 offers including USC, Texas A&M, Penn State, Oregon and Michigan.

Washington is the nation’s No. 85 player, No. 13 defensive lineman and Arizona’s No. 2 player. The 6-foot-5, 295-pounder had 27 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and two blocked punts across six games this season. He is also a teammate of Ohio State’s 2022 wide receiver commit Kyion Grayes.

Ohio State’s 2023 class ranks as No. 4 and has earned commitments from five-star safety Sonny Styles, four-star tight end Ty Lockwood and four-star offensive lineman Joshua Padilla. The Buckeyes are in good standing with a handful of junior defensive linemen including David Hicks Jr., who recently included the program in his top 11, Lebbeus Overton and Derrick LeBlanc.

Tuesday, 2023 wide receiver Chris Culliver was the latest to receive an offer after staff paid him a visit at Maiden (N.C.) High School. The offer was a long time coming, dating back to Culliver attending an Ohio State camp in June and making a gameday visit to Ohio Stadium as they hosted Penn State in October.

According to 247Sports rankings, the three-star is the No. 66 receiver and North Carolina’s No. 10 player. He holds 13 offers including South Carolina, Tennesse, Kentucky, Virginia and has a crystal ball prediction to UNC.

2023 wide receiver Rico Flores Jr. of Folsom (California) also received an offer on Tuesday. Flores Jr. is ranked as a four-star and the No. 23 receiver in his class. He has 26 offers including Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Texas. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder had 64 receptions for 932 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. He is also the teammate of an Ohio State target, 2023 tight end Walker Lyons.

Four-star defensive lineman to release top 5 soon

Keith Sampson Jr., a 2023 defensive tackle, will soon cut his top 10 list in half according to his Twitter. The prospect will narrow his favorites from Duke, Alabama, East Carolina, N.C. State, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio State, South Carolina, Florida State and Virginia.

“When I first found out I was getting an offer from Ohio State it was really crazy because they’re a powerhouse program and it proved to me that my hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed,” Sampson Jr. told cleveland.com earlier this year.

The four-star has not held back on his fondness for the program. Following his gameday visit against Penn State, he told media that Ohio State is very high on his list and exceeded expectations.

During his visit, he built upon his relationship with defensive line coach Larry Johnson and also sparked conversations with defensive linemen JT Tuimoloau and Zach Harrison, an important factor to his decision criteria.

“It’s important for me to know what (the players) life is like on a day-to-day basis and what are some of the struggles they go through,” he said. “I want to make sure we have an off-the-field relationship as well because that only helps our performance.”

“I like how hard they play. The whole defense. It’s not just the offense. They bring high intensity to the game. It isn’t just a big drop-off where one side of the ball is carrying the whole team. They have good players on both sides,” he said in May.
