For more than 20 years, Robin Spicher of Peterborough was a fixture behind the counter at the Brookside Mobil.
“She was just a sweetheart. She was full of life,” said Brookside manager and Spicher’s longtime friend Karen Hickerson.
After Spicher’s recent passing, customers of the gas station/convenience store have been giving back in her honor.
Spicher, 55, died on March 24 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a long period of illness. She worked at the Mobil until she was no longer able, and Hickerson said she knew most customers by name.
After her passing, in accordance with her wishes for donations to be made in her name to the Monadnock Humane Society instead of flowers, the Brookside Mobil put out a donation jar in her name, Hickerson said. That careful care Spicher took of her customers came back to her, in the form of more than $500 in donations.
On Wednesday, Hickerson was able to turn over the donations to a representative of the Humane Society.
“We’re so thankful to have the support of the Brookside Mini-Mart in Wilton,” said Carol Laughner, marketing communications manager for Monadnock Humane Society. “Their customers have donated so generously in Robin’s memory. The money will help us care for hundreds of homeless pets annually as well as support the programs and services we provide for the animals and their humans in our region. This is such a beautiful way to honor Robin’s life.”
Hickerson said Spicher’s spirit would be missed at the store by those she worked with and those she served.
Spicher had a fun personality, and would usually don a headband or costume in the days leading up to holidays like Halloween, Easter and Christmas, Hickerson said. She would tell customers to have a “groovy” day, and she kept up that playful spirit even through her illness.
“She never let on that she was sick,” Hickerson said. “She worked here until she couldn’t any more. She never let on that she was having a bad day. Her customers loved her.”
Spicher was a graduate of ConVal High School in Peterborough and worked for many years at NEBS as well as the Mobil. She lived in Peterborough most of her life, with some time spent living in Milford.
She loved crafts, going out to eat and cooking, and visiting pick-your-own farms, Hickerson said. She owned two beloved cats, Bob and Will, and was a great animal lover.
There will be no calling hours or services held for Spicher at this time, with a celebration of life planned at a later date.
If you would like to make a donation in Spicher’s name, memorial contributions can be made directly to the Monadnock Humane Society, located on 101 West Swanzey Road in Swanzey.
