DURHAM, N.C. – On a day to celebrate the accomplishments of a deep senior class, the Duke track & field program shattered several records en route to a historic day in the home finale at the Duke Twilight on Monday.
The first event of the day brought the Blue Devils an early victory. Freshman Moorea Mitchell earned first place in the women's hammer, recording a throw of 51.16m (167-10 feet) for her second-best throw of the season.
Mitchell's win set the tone for a historic day, as the first record book addition came shortly thereafter. Senior Erin Marsh and graduate student Zoe Hughes entered the day tied with the fifth furthest long jump in program history and neither wanted to give it up. The duo matched each other and set personal bests, as Marsh took first and Hughes took second with respective jumps of 6.06m (19-10.75 feet) to improve their personal bests.
Wins kept on piling up for the Blue Devils as the women's 4x100m relay team of sophomore Halle Bieber, graduate students Brittany Aveni and Elena Brown-Soler and junior Kelcie Simmons took home the top spot. The quartet ran a blazing time of 44.74 seconds to set the fifth fastest mark in program history and break a Duke Twilight meet record, originally set by Liberty in 2015.
Senior Leigha Torino delivered another steady performance, taking first in the 800m with a time of 2:07.66. That was good for an outdoor personal best as the Citra, Fla., native is aiming to set herself up for another wildly successful ACC Championships run, after qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the same event several months ago.
Field events continued to be a strong point for the Blue Devils, as three men took top four spots in the men's javelin with freshman Scott Campbell earning a throw of 65.46m (214-9 feet) to lead the pack in second place. Sophomore Luke Jackson had a huge day, breaking his own personal best several times en route to a final distance of 64.20m (210-7 feet) to take fourth, setting the Haughton, La., native for a potential NCAA East Regional appearance after moving into 47th in the rankings.
The women's high jump and women's 100m hurdles added more top finishes, as senior Rivka Arbiv and sophomore Elasia Campbell finished second and third in the high jump, while graduate student Cha'Mia Rothwell and Marsh took first and second in the hurdles. Arbiv earned personal best in the high jump, breaking her previous best by 0.5 meters to a tune of 1.72m (5-7.75 feet).
The 400m proved to be a huge event for the Blue Devils. In the men's event, graduate student Alex Schwedt set a collegiate personal best of 47.34 seconds to take first place. In the women's event, graduate student Iman Sule also finished first, setting a personal best with a run of 52.79 seconds. Sule's run not only improved her fourth fastest time in program history, but also broke a 10-year-old meet record of 52.97 seconds, set by unattached athlete Jernail Hayes in 2011. Sophomore Jenna Crean continues to shave time off her personal best, finishing right behind Sule in second place with a time of 54.61 seconds.
A record-setting day would not be complete without a big run from Aveni, who has already set four school records this outdoor season. Aveni broke her own 100m dash record of 11.41 seconds with a blazing run of 11.35 seconds to take first place. The Geneva, Ohio native secured stronger positioning for the NCAA East Regional, moving up from 29th fastest time in the region to the 20th. Simmons and Bieber rounded out the top three in the same event, as Simmons recorded the fourth fastest time in program history with a personal best of 11.69 seconds.
More Blue Devils took home top marks, as senior Lauren Hoffman won the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.59 seconds. Men's counterpart Connor Atkinson took second in the same event, but set a personal best of 51.83 seconds, to improve his own third fastest mark in program history and move him from 38th to 29th in NCAA East Regional qualifying.
Much like the 100m, the Blue Devil women swept the top-three spots in the 200m, as Aveni won again with a dash of 23.20 seconds, this time breaking a meet and facility record of 23.43 seconds set by NC State's Paisley Simmons in 2015. Simmons and Brown-Soler rounded out the top-three with another personal best time coming from Simmons.
Sophomores Kinsie Huggins and Ezra Mellinger added more strong performances as the afternoon waned. Huggins took home second place, setting a personal best and the third furthest throw in Blue Devils history at 14.17m (46-6 feet). Mellinger took home first in the 200m with a mark of 21.42 seconds.
The evening concluded with more dominance on the track, beginning with the 3000m steeplechase. Freshman Victoria Patterson delivered one of the most impressive performances of the night, taking first in the event with a time of 10:16.98. Not only did it shatter her personal best by 11.22 seconds, but it also checked in as the fourth fastest time in program history, in just her fourth ever run in the event. Teammate Emily Cole took second, crushing her previous best by 15.99 seconds with a time of 10:25.07. In the men's event, sophomore Ryan Thompson smashed his personal best, taking second with a time of 9:04.41.
In the women's 4x400m relay, the quartet of Sule, Hoffman, sophomore Carly King and Crean took first with a time of 3:36.96. The mark broke a meet record of 3:40.98, originally set by Georgia Tech in 2015.
The evening concluded with the men's and women's 5000m and was full of brilliance from the Blue Devils distance runners. Both teams swept the top-three positions as senior Michaela Reinhart turned in a blistering run of 16:14.78 to take first place. Reinhart set a personal best and a meet record, breaking former Blue Devil Juliet Bottorff's mark of 16:24.13 set in 2010. Right behind her were seniors Amanda Beach (16:38.36) and Sara Platek (16:57.36). On the men's side, senior Josh Romine followed the same path as Reinhart, taking first place with a meet record, unseating North Carolina's Stephen Mulherin, who set the previous top mark of 14:34.24 in 2015. Senior Paul Dellinger and sophomore Connor Wells rounded out the top three.
The Blue Devils will now turn their attention to the postseason, beginning with the ACC Outdoor Championships from May 13-15. The program won't have to travel far, with the event hosted at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility on the campus of NC State.
