– Daniel Oturu became the 54th player in Minnesota Golden Gophers history to be selected in the NBA Draft when the Minnesota Timberwolves chose him with the 33rd overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft Wednesday night.Oturu is the first Minnesota player to be drafted since Kris Humphries was selected 14th overall by the Utah Jazz in 2004, and Oturu is also the second Golden Gopher to be selected by the Timberwolves, joining Rick Rickert (55th overall in 2003).
A native of Woodbury, Minn., Oturu finished his Minnesota career with exactly 1,000 points, one of 45 players in history to reach the number. He averaged 15.2 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks while shooting 55.8 percent from the floor and 37.0 percent on 3-pointers. He played in 66 career games for the Maroon and Gold with 62 starts.
All-time at Minnesota, he finished fifth in field goal percentage, 14th in blocks (122), 17th in scoring average and 45th in points.
Oturu put together one of the finest seasons in Minnesota basketball history last year as a sophomore. He averaged 20.1 points and 11.4 rebounds per game while blocking 2.5 shots per contest, figures which ranked second, first and first in the conference respectively. Oturu's field goal percentage of 56.2 was also tops in the conference, while he was second with 18 double-doubles on the year. He set a school record with 226 rebounds in Big Ten play, besting Jordan Murphy's year-old mark of 218, and posted the second-best scoring average all-time among Gopher sophomores.
Oturu reached double digits in scoring in all but one game, tallying 16 games with 20-plus points and twice eclipsing the 30-point mark.
The numbers last year put up by Oturu ranked third in Minnesota single-season history in field goals made (238) and rebounds (349), fourth in points (623) and 20-point games (17), seventh in blocks (76), eighth in double-doubles (18) and 17th in scoring average.
He became the first Golden Gopher to earn a spot on a national All-America team in 21 years as Sporting News selected him to its All-America Third Team. He was also named to the All-Big Ten Second Team by the coaches and media, and earned an All-District Team honor from the United States Basketball Writers Association.
As a freshman, Oturu played in 35 games with 31 starts and led the team in blocks (46) and field goal percentage (55.1) while ranking second in rebounding (7.0) and third in scoring (10.8). Among Big Ten freshmen, ranked first in rebounding, field goal shooting and blocks and eighth in scoring. He was second on the team with eight double-doubles and scored in double figures 20 times.
