"It was great to see our kids racing again even if it was just a competition among our own team," stated cross country coach Brad Herbster. "It truly took a team effort to make this season happen, from Heather Lyke to Jen Tuscano to Coach Webb to the entire medical staff, we are very lucky and appreciative to have this opportunity. We are racing this season, something a lot of teams in the country can't say, so when our student-athletes put on the uniform, for the first time in months, I want them to take a moment, look their teammates in the eye and enjoy every moment."
The women kicked off the action on Friday night as they took on the 5K course at Youthtowne. Junior Brenda Ayuk (Team Royal) put together an impressive showing as she led the race wire-to-wire to claim the individual victory while senior Ally Brunton (Team Gold) was close behind, taking home second place. Freshman Olivia Zambrio (Team Gold) put together a strong collegiate debut as she crossed the finish line in third place. Corinne Firestone, Emily Bonaventure and Mary Borkoski also impressed for Team Gold while Lily Robertson, Talia Spillerman, Carly Ukalovic and Megan Nagy gave Team Royal a strong performance in their season debuts.
"I really liked the fight that Brenda, Ally and Olivia showed and I was also impressed with the big improvements shown by Emily Bonaventure during this first event of the season," said Herbster.
The men's 7K race was tightly contested throughout before graduate transfer and 2019 NCAA Championships participant Marc Migliozzi (Team Gold) pulled away at the end to claim the individual victory. Senior Zach Lefever (Team Royal) opened up the season with an impressive showing as he crossed the finish line in second place while Josh Higgins (Team Gold) finished close behind in third place. Jack Miller (Team Royal) looked strong in his sophomore year debut with a fourth place finish while the freshmen trio of Luke Henseler, Sam Otis and Ethan Maher finished strong in their first collegiate competition.
"On the men's side, we have a really strong group this year led by Zach, Josh and Marc," said Herbster. "I think this group has a chance to shock some people this season. Jack Miller looked really good while the freshmen trio of Henseler, Otis and Maher also looked good in the season-opening meet."
The Panthers will return to action on Friday, October 2 as they travel to Annapolis, Md. to take on the United States Naval Academy.
